Led by two relay teams which finished in the top five, the Logan County Cougars finished a super track season at the University of Louisville last weekend.

The 4x400 meter relay team of Sye Head, Colton Spencer, Dylan Cole and Michael Sydnor turned in a blistering time of 3:30.97 to finish fourth. The 4x800 team of Spencer, Noah Thomas, Head and Levi Crossley placed fifth with a time of 8:24.33.

Sydnor also set a personal best in the triple jump with a leap of 42’ 1” to land on the podium with a 7th place finish and jumping more than two and a half feet better than his previous best. Hayley Mayher continued her winning ways as she threw the discus 97’ 8” to earn her a spot on the awards podium and an 8th place finish.

Justin Rone competed in four events at state and finished 12th in the 110M Hurdles (16.92), 13th in 300M Hurdles (43.37), and 22nd in the High Jump (5’ 8”). Thomas continued his streak of setting personal bests each of his last three meets as he finished 13th in the mile run (4:44.98). The boys 4 X 200M Relay of Spencer, Cole, Aaron Foster, and Sydnor placed just outside the awards with a 10th place finish (1:34.25).

Jasmine Martin competed at state in both the 100M Dash in 16th (13.41) and the 200M Dash in 20th (27.93). Colton Spencer placed 9th  in the 400M Dash with a time of 51.64. Tyler Wood threw the shot put a distance of 36’ 7.25’ placing him in 24th.

“I’ve coached some great kids over the years, but none any greater than this year’s team. The “happy ride’ is over now that state is complete,” said Coach Greg Howard. “We are graduating 18 seniors who have impacted my life forever and left wonderful memories that warm my heart. Yeah, they competed on a whole different scale than others and set the bar high, but the biggest legacy this group will leave is one of humility. They didn’t walk around with their heads in the clouds; they just went about their daily lives as students and kids, taking care of homework and working on weekends.

“This year’s team brought home more state medals than any other team I’ve coached. They didn’t achieve exactly everything they were looking for, some felt their sub-par performances let their team down, and nerves entered into events that we didn’t see coming. One thing I can tell you about these kids at state is that they competed!”

Howard concluded,” One of the best overall team efforts we’ve had in recent years at state and effort that signifies what it means to be a Cougar track athlete. I am so proud of these kids!!!!! There were 73 teams that had entries into this year’s state meet, and the boys finished 22nd and our girls finished 41st. Congratulations to all as you served us well!”
