A basketball camp which includes instruction by professionals is being offered by two key members of the Bowling Green Hornets in conjunction with the team.

Squeaky Hampton and Nathan Thompson, who were key players on Coach Phil Todd’s consecutive 2000 and 2001 state Final Four basketball teams at Russellville High School, are offering the camp at their alma mater June 6-8.

Hampton had an outstanding All-OVC career for Coach Dave Loos at Austin Peay State University before going overseas to play professionally the past seven years. He has been highly successful in Scotland, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Greece and Israel.

Thompson was a three-sport athlete at RHS and is widely considered the best soccer player in Panther history. He served seven years as assistant basketball coach at RHS under Dennis Pardue. Last year he was named athletic director at his alma mater, even though his full-time job is being a loan officer at First Southern National Bank. He assists another Panther alumnus, Otis Key, as assistant coach for the Hornets.

The camp is for ages 10-18 and costs $30 per camper.

“Girls are also welcomed!” Hampton says. “Let’s Support Positivity for our youth. More events are planned in the future. Preparing for tomorrow!”

Hampton made his debut with the Hornets in a 119-116 loss at Nashville Friday. He will make his home debut this Friday, May 31 at Jim Young Gymnasium when General Manager Waseem Moorad’s squad returns to Russellville. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Hornets will play their final home game of the spring portion of the season the following Saturday, June 8, at 8 p.m. Outstanding players from the camp will be recognized at the game.

The following is information from a flier distributed about the camp:

Want to learn to play basketball or improve your skills? Want to be taught personally by coaches & athletes that have excelled in basketball & advanced themselves to higher levels in the sport? This is your opportunity. Hornets guard & former international professional basketball player Maurice “Squeaky” Hampton & Hornets Assistant Coach & RHS Athletic Director Nathan Thompson will be leading a 3-day youth summer basketball camp for ages 10-18 to improve & develop the skill-set of young basketball players.

Whether it be dribbling techniques, free throw & three point shooting, improvement in defensive play, or teaching personal demeanor, the Hornets want to groom the next generation of talented individuals on & off the court. The top athletes will be recognized the night of the last day of camp at the Bowling Green Hornets home finale vs. the Middle Tennessee Storm on June 8 at 8 p.m. at Russellville High School.
