For the fourth straight game in postseason play Tuesday, the Logan County Cougars scored all their runs in one inning, none in the other six. Despite not scoring in 25 of the 29 innings Logan had played in district and regional action, Coach Ethan Meguiar’s team ran its 2013 tournament record to 4-0 and advanced to the Fourth Region championship game the following evening.
The victim this time was highly regarded Glasgow, with the dean of Fourth Region coaches, Sam Royse, at then helm. The site was Nick Denes Field on the campus of Western Kentucky University.
Sophomore Caleb Bruner pitched his second straight postseason shutout. He gave up two hits and walked only one Scottie while striking out eight. He threw a first-pitch strike to 20 of the 24 GHS batters who came to the plate. Sixty of his 84 pitches were strikes. Even with the eight strikeouts, he averaged only three and a half pitches per batter.
Only one Scottie made it as far as second base. That came in the second inning. Camerin Garman walked and moved up on Connor Glass’ single, but Bruner got a pair of fly outs to end the threat. In the sixth, Garman picked up the other GHS hit, but Glass grounded into a double play to stifle that rally.
Logan’s two runs scored in the fifth inning. After Ryan Basham reached on an error, Thomas Miller singled and Basham scored on the throw. Gages Hales followed with an RBI single.
They had come close to scoring in the fourth inning. Bruner, Dustin Cartas and Matt Harper singled in that inning, but courtesy runner Michael Riley was called out in a very close play at the plate. Cartas and Harper were stranded.
Bruner had two hits in the game with Hales, Cartas, Harper, Ian Woodall and Miller adding one each. Glasgow pitcher John Green didn’t walk a batter either.
Glasgow, which won the 4th Region Class A championship in mid-season, finished with a 22-15 record. Logan’s record went forward to 25-10 on the way to the finals.
