The “New Era” in cross country and track has begun. With graduating almost all of the young men and women that have put both programs over the top, life as we know it has changed. The numbers on the bus are fewer, handing out uniforms is much quicker, and taking roll is a snap.
“Even though all of that has changed, the heart of the next generation of runners hasn’t. The Cougars graduated long-time state runners in Noah Thomas, Sye Head, Colton Spencer, and Austin Rouse. Our kids know what we had and are anxious to continue the legacy of so many great runners from the past,” said Coach Greg Howard. “Saturday may not have been our best times but it sure was a great start to the 2013 season and a glimpse into what is sure to come
The veteran coach was referring to the new team’s performance in the season-opening track meet at Warren East.
In the girls elementary race Ashtyn Cole, the sister of state track runner Dylan Cole, put on her running shoes for her first race ever and finished the 2000 meter race in 11:10.85 for a 38th place finish in a race that had 128 runners.
In the boys elementary race, Price Violette finished in 81st place with a time of 11:05.09. His race had 149 young runners. The boys middle school took full advantage of training with the high school runners and put together what Howard called “some mighty fine racing so early in the season.” They were Gage Cousineau (19th)12:15.29, Tanner Morrow (20th)12:22.71,and Zach Baker (79th) 16:26.49. They competed at 3000M, (approximatley 1.8 miles) and against 103 other runners.
Logan’s boys varsity took the course to compete at 3.1 miles (5K) against some of the best teams in this part of the state. “Their times are not near what we expect from them but its early and plenty of training ahead will get us there,” Howard said.
The Cougars were led by Kelly Eicher (23rd) 18:50.79, Levi Crossley (29th) 19:06.44, Kaleb O’Dell (30th) 19:07.57, Thomas Lyne (42nd)09:41.56, and Clint Baker (125th) 24:14.25. The Cougars finished in 6th place overall and beat their arch-rival, Edmonson County. A total of 19 teams competed in the scorching heat Saturday with a total of 164 runners.
“Not a bad start to begin our season but we all know that we can be so much better. The Cougars will race next Saturday at Kereiakes Park in Bowling Green,” Coach Howard said.
