Going into a late-season match with a 14-2 record, the Lady Cougars of Logan County weren’t satisfied. One of their losses had come a month earlier to the same Bowling Green team which also eliminated them in last year’s regional tournament before the Lady Cougars had reached their customary berth in the finals.

The Lady Cougars got their revenge Tuesday by beating Coach Amy Wininger’s Lady Purples, coming from behind twice at 18-25, 25-21, 12-25, 15-10 in the match played at BGH. When Bowling Green won at LCHS on Aug. 22, Coach Steven Lyne’s Lady Cougars seemed to have the match under control early. They won each of the first two games 25-20 and needed to win only one of the last three to take the match. But BGH won Games 3 & 4 by counts of 25-19 and 25-21 before pulling out a 15-13 nailbiter.

In last week’s match, senior Maddie Abbott had 25 digs and 30 service receptions to lead the way.

Sophomore Chanler Steenbergen was credited with 47 attacks, resulting in 10 kills. Kapreshia Powell had 30 attacks. Brianna Wooden made the most of her 11 attacks, getting kills on 6 of them.  Abbott had 10 attacks and Katelyn Jones added 4 kills.

Senior Rachyl Miller was the leader in aces with 6 and digs with 22. Victoria Cates picked up the only other assist for her team, and joined Abbott with 30 service returns. Powell had 8 digs with Steenbergen and Miller adding 7 each.

Savannah Shelton was second in aces with 4 while Abbott, Cates and freshman Catherine Miller each had 2.

Jones was the blocks leader with 9. Wooden and Rachyl Miller blocked 3 shots each with Powell getting 2. Catherine Miller had 5 service receptions and fellow freshman Amber Carroll 3.

Also playing were Chelsey Hopkins, Maranda Wright and Jacyln Batchelor.

After going 1-1 in the Jefferson County Invitational this weekend with a win over Whitefield Academy and a loss to Ryle, the Lady Cougars have a 16-3 record for the best winning percentage in the Fourth Region. Monroe County is 21-5 and BGH 13-3.

The Lady Cougars play Thursday at defending regional champion Greenwood, which is struggling this season. They’ll play in the Quad State Tournament at McCracken County this weekend and then finish the regular season against visiting South Warren (13-6) Tuesday, Oct. 15, after fall break ends.
