The Olmstead Lady Rams began their 2013 volleyball season without a single starter from the 2012 runner-up team. Coach Buddy Wright knew, however, that he would have a few returning players with experience, as well as the addition of some new eighth graders with quickness and athleticism.

"I knew that after seeing how level the playing field was after the kickoff tournament, our girls had a chance to do something for the first time in Olmstead history, to win a championship," Coach Wright said. The girls immediately embraced the challenge and were set out on a mission.

Olmstead returned key players with experience, such as Leah Crossley, Taylor Haley, Evett Young, Jill Baldwin, Carlie Alvis, and Blayke Bingham, whom was the centerpiece of the defense throughout the season. Other key new players were Taylor Beaty, Ginny Edwards, Madison Stratton, and Heather Hathcox, whom had previous experience playing in New Mexico.

Coach Wright said, "One thing I really liked about this team is the fact that they never gave up, they were always giving it their all. We were fortunate this year to have the lead in most matches, but when we were down, the girls continued to battle for each point."

The Lady Rams finished a 12-3 campaign by defeating the Auburn Lady Tigers in the Logan County Middle School Volleyball Championship on Sept. 26 at LCHS.

Wright finished by saying, "I am really proud of this team for their hard work and for completing the goal they set at the beginning of the season, bringing the first volleyball championship to Olmstead."
