Meagan Ferguson not only pitched the Logan County Lady Cougars to a district victory over visiting Russellville Wednesday, but she also had three hits, including a double, and drove in a run for Coach Michael Crawford’s team.
Senior Maddie Abbott also had a big game in the 12-2 win, homering, singling, driving in five runs and scoring a pair.
The Lady Cougars banged out 11 hits. Senior Victoria Cates joined Abbott with a pair of hits while Shelby Milam, Sierra Morrow, Cierra Johnson and Brea Croslin each added a hit. Tristan Hales, Milam Abbott and Morrow each scored two runs with Ferguson, Cates, Croslin and Jordyn Belcher also scoring. Ferguson, Milam and Morrow each stole a base.
Cierra Collins had two of the six hits for the Lady Cougars and scored both runs. Tara Gilbert, Taylor Gray. Johnea Pendleton and Allison McDaniel got the other four hits for RHS. Gilbert tripled in Collins with one of the runs. Ferguson didn’t walk a single Lady Panther and she struck out seven. She did hit Samantha Pomerin and Collins, who stole a base.
The Lady Cougars had a huge fourth inning. Rachel Barnett reached on an error, Macy Meacham sacrificed her over, and Croslin singled. That brought up the top of the order. Ferguson doubled, Milam and Abbott singled, Morrow walked and Cates tripled. Johnson reached on an error and Barnett reached on an error for the second time in the inning. Seven runs scored.
Gilbert pitched for the Lady Panthers. Only eight of the runs were earned. She walked four and struck out one. Sixty of her 97 pitches were strikes. The Lady Panthers made five errors, but Collins and Pendleton turned two double plays.
This was the first game for new RHS coach Brandy Nuyt Trimble to coach against her alma mater. The former Campbellsville University star is considered one of the best softball players in LCHS history.
Two girls who played for Logan County were starters for Russellville last year. They are Croslin, a sixth grader, and freshman Meacham.
Coach Crawford told his players after the game, “Great job tonight. We saw a lot of good things and and are very proud of the way you responded tonight. We have to continue to get better every day and work hard no matter what.”
