After his Logan County track teams competed in a multi-school meet at Fort Campbell Saturday, Coach Greg Howard said,
“Another great day and a day of marked improvement from many of the athletes on both teams. Many of our athletes continue to put together great performances and are working hard to improve times and distances before we head to regionals on Thursday, May 15 at Central Hardin. The meet Saturday was called the Coach Johnson Memorial Invitational in honor of Coach Johnson who passed away two years ago from an asthma attack. Coach Johnson was a wonderful 24-year-old coach who obviously had kids in mind as he coached and worked hard to always give them his best. I had the opportunity to meet his parents and was humbled when they asked if we could take pictures together. After meeting and talking with them for some time Saturday, I understand why Coach Johnson was such a blessing to us all.”
Logan was without the services of Michael Sydnor and Joe McGinnis. Sydnor was recovering from an injury and McGinnis was at a tennis match. Both athletes would have scored several points for us and were truly missed.
The girls once again put on an outstanding show with sparkling times and distances. Sophomore Bre Baptiste led the way with her 8th place finish in the 200M, 6th in the 400M, 2nd in the Long Jump, and led the 4 X 400M Relay to a 4th place finish. All of her performances were personal bests again and her long jump was over 2 feet better than her previous best. Eighth grader Meredith Johnson was on the 4 X 400M, placed 7thin the 400M, 10th in the 200M. Senior Deja Thompson once again used her much improved techniques to the test, as she had personal bests in the shot and discus. She finished 3rd in the shot and 14th in the discus.
Coach Howard said, “Eighth grader Leah Crossley is gaining form as she recovers from an injury by placing 10th in the 1600M and improving by 9 seconds. Now that she’s gaining strength we will look to use her in more events. Twins, Paige and Peyton Vanzant continue to impress this ole coach. Paige was on the 4 X 400M and placed 3rd in the 1600M while running sub 6:00 with a time of 5:58.95, pretty awesome. Peyton also competed in the 1600M while placing 11th. Eighth grader Anjali Evans competed in the 4 X 400M, the 100M, 200M, and the 400M. All times for her were also personal bests. I’m so proud of these kids as they just continue to amaze us all.”
The boys were led by Kelly Eicher, Levi Crossley, and Kaleb O’ Dell. They ran the 4 X 800M Relay, the 1600M, and 3200M. Senior Cody Meacham earned another personal best in the shot put. Also running for the boys were Andrew Gregory, Alex Brown, Cory Ford, Matt Scales, Brad Aubrey, and Gage Cousineau. Andrew competed in the 100M, 200M, and 400M and had personal bests in the 100M and 200M. Alex Brown also competed and had personal bests in the 100M and 200M. Brad Aubrey continues to improve and had personal bests in the 100M and the 200M. Gage Cousineau stepped into the varsity ranks and ran personal bests in the 800M and the 3200M. Matt Scales and Cory Ford competed in the 1600M with Scales setting a personal best.
“We competed with some great talent Saturday and I am pretty pleased with our progress. Our kids continue to work hard and have the desire I’m so proud of,” Howard said
Logan County’s teams will travel to Russellville Thursday and then on to Elizabethtown on Friday evening to compete in the Panther Twilight Relays where they will get a look at some talented teams from our region.
“I hope we are healthy and ready to give it our all,” Coach Howard said.
