Lady Cougars get pair of one-run wins over Hoptown

The Logan County Lady Cougars swept a doubleheader from visiting Hopkinsville Monday, winning the opener 4-3 and the nightcap 5-4.

In the opener, Logan scored two runs each in the second and third innings to take a 4-3 lead and then neither team scored the rest of the way. In the second, Shelby Milam and Cierra Johnson started the rally with singles, and Reagan Cole was hit by a pitch, giving way to courtesy runner Jordyn Belcher. Macy Meacham drove in Milam on a fielder’s choice. Hannah Moore plated Belcher with another fielder’s choice.

In the third, Victoria Cates and Milam started it with singles. Cates scored and Milam went to third when Cole’s ball was booted, and Belcher came on for her. Milam scored the winning run on Meacham’s grounder.

Sixth grader Brea Croslin finished with three hits while Meagan Ferguson and Milam each had two.  One of Ferguson’s was a double. Maddie Abbott, Cates and Johnson added one each.

Ferguson pitched the win, giving up the three runs (two earned) on seven singles, no walks and four strikeouts. Of her 92 pitches, 65 were strikes. Darby White took the loss for the Tigers.

Logan had to go into the eighth inning to beat the Lady Tigers a second time. Meacham, a freshman, pitched the win, and Johnson was the hitting star, going three for four.

Hoptown was officially the home team in this one, so even though Coach Michael Crawford’s Lady Cougars scored twice in the eighth, they had to pitch to the Lady Tigers again.

Those eighth inning runs came when Johnson laced a two-out triple, scoring Sierra Morrow, and Cole singled in Johnson. The Tigers scored a run in the bottom of the eighth when Taylor Schlosser drove in Bailey Downs, but Meacham stopped it there.

The Lady Cougars scored a run in the second inning when Milam singled, Cole walked, and Jordan Goss singled. The other two runs scored in the fifth when Meacham led off with a walk, gave way to courtesy runner Susanna Higgins, advanced when Abbott was hit by a pitch, Croslin walked and Morrow reached on an error. Abbott also scored during that sequence.

Goss supported Johnson with two hits while Morrow, Milam and Cole had one each. Johnson, Cole and Goss were credited with RBIs. Abbott, Croslin, Cole and Goss got the four walks White gave up. She struck out three.

Meacham gave up 10 hits and a walk on the way to the win and the sweep.
