Splitting a pair of one-run games in the South Warren Invitational, the Logan County Cougars lost 4-3 to the host Spartans and then beat Bowling Green 5-4 Saturday.
The loss overshadowed a night and a weekend to remember for the Woodall brothers (and for their parents, Kristi and Dr. David Woodall). The Woodalls hit a trio of triples, two by senior Ian and the other by junior Luke. Ian tripled in Matt Harper for the first run of the game, and his fifth-inning three-bagger added another RBI. Luke added a single to his triple, walked and drove in a run.
Michael Riley doubled among his two hits while Caleb Bruner had a hit and a run. Harper scored two runs after walking twice. Joe Holliday and Bruner each reached on an error.
Dylan Taylor drove in what proved to be the winning run on a groundout in the sixth. Ryder Litten and Wes King each had two hits while Grant Noble, Jacob Smiley, Austin McElwain and Everett Taylor each had a hit. Jacob Lewis and Smiley picked up the only walks Cougar pitching allowed.
Holliday pitched the first five innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and a walk. One of the runs was unearned. Harper pitched the final inning and gave up the run on a hit and a walk while striking out one.
King got the win for Coach Chris Gage‘s team, allowing no runs on one hit and a walk in two and a third innings in relief of starter Michael Hicks.
Logan County 5, Bowling Green 4
The Woodalls continued to contribute the next day. Luke did it by doubling in two runs, sacrificing a runner over, and scoring the winning run. Ian picked up his third triple in two days and scored.
Jacob Wood was the only Cougar with two hits, and he also scored and sacrificed. Also getting a hit and RBI each were Harper and Bruner. Hunter Britt and Harper joined the Woodalls with an extra base hit, both doubling. Riley singled and Holliday scored a run. Jackson Campbell and Joe Olliges also played in the win.
Jordan Hendrix pitched into the fifth as the starter for Coach Ethan Meguiar’s team. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits and four walks. Britt was effective in relief, throwing one-hit, no-walk shutout baseball in two and a third innings for the win.
Multi-sport standout Nacarius Fant—Kentucky’s Mr. Football--was the starting pitcher for Coach Dan Mosier’s Purples. Bradley Wierson took the loss in relief.
Clay Stivers, who starred along with Fant on Bowling Green’s Final Four basketball team, was the only BGH batter with two hits, and both of them were doubles. Devin Hayes doubled in two runs and Joseph McIntyre also doubled.
