The 2013-2014 version of LCHS track and field came to an end this past weekend at the KHSAA State Track and Field Championships, held at the University of Kentucky. The event returned to UK after being held at the University of Louisville the past 10 years or so.
“What an awesome facility they have and another opportunity for our athletes to compete at the highest level of high school track and field. It was early and often our Cougars found out about how awesome Class AAA is and that we have our work cut out for us in the future,” said Coach Greg Howard.
“Our three seniors gave their all and walked away with an experience that will last them a lifetime! Even though they did not earn a state title, they earned my respect in their efforts and their diligence in learning their craft.”
Michael Sydnor was competing in his third state meet in a row and things just didn’t go his way. A foot injury plagued him all season long. Howard rested him and saw that he received proper therapy, but in the end it was just too much to overcome. Michael finished 23rd with a jump that was four feet under his personal best in the triple jump.
Joe McGinnis moved up in the state standings as he improved from being seeded 24th in the discus, while finishing 21st. Deja Thompson continued her improvement in the shot put as she came in seeded 20th and set another PR and finished 12th!
“Another great year for us. I’ve always said if you rate our season on the number of medals or trophies we’ve won, it would not be an indication of the quality of our team,” Coach Howard said. “Showing up for practice every day, stepping on the track and always trying to improve, teaching the younger athletes, setting goals and working towards them, are the only trues way to rate our season. These kids that competed at state are exemplary examples of those previously listed. They set the standard and set it high.
“They are more of a long line of great kids to adorn our track and to grace us all with their commitment to be great, regardless of the cost. Our lives’ will be touched forever because our seniors gave us more than we asked for! I thank God he allowed them to share a part of their lives’ with us!”
