Former Logan County High School golfer Will McKenzie capped an outstanding golf career at Brescia University this weekend by winning the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship.

McKenzie, who had also been All-Conference two previous seasons, won the title by four strokes Saturday. He had led by three strokes going into the final 18 holes of the 54-hole event, which was played at the Liberty Country Club in Indiana, Ind., the home course of Indiana University East.

He shot a 72 in rough weather conditions Saturday. In the first two rounds, he shot 74 and 73.

The win not only made him conference champion, but it also gave him the title of 2015 KIAC Player of the Year. Additionally, he earned an automatic berth in the NAIA national championship tournament, to be in Daytona, Fla. May 18-22.

Finishing second to McKenzie was Diego Ortiz of team champion Point Park. He also shot a 72 Saturday but was three back of the former Cougar going in.

A senior, McKenzie has been a good all-around student at Brescia where he is known as the Voice of the Bearcats doing the public address announcing for the men’s and women’s basketball teams at the Owensboro college. He is on a Trustee’s Scholarship.

The son of Terry McKenzie and Candy Hardiman has a major in math with a minor in sports management.

He qualified for state while playing for Coach Ethan Meguiar’s Cougars. He was named to the Kentucky All-Academic first team in 2010.
