Brian Doyle is a former New York Yankee who always played his best in the World Series. He is the brother of former Russellville basketball coach Denny Doyle and the brother-in-law of Marie Caudill of Auburn. He is a close friend of Mark and Jean Reynolds of Russellville. He posted the following this morning after the death of the legendary Yankee Yogi Berra.
Connie and I want to send our condolences to the Berra family. Yogi has many friends and has touched each one of us through his love and compassion. There is no doubt that he is one of the best men I have ever known. Baseball has not lost a great man because Yogi will always be remembered and will always be the greatest ambassador to the game.
I will always remember after we won the ‘78 World Series, Carmen and Yogi were on the elevator with Connie and me. He looked at me and said, "Hey, Shorty, you got 50 cents? I need a soda.”
I said, “Yogi, we have just won a World Championship and you need 50 cents.
Yogi said, "Ain't got no change.”
I can't count how many meals we had together on road trips. But I do remember in Minnesota where he saw Catfish Hunter and me and asked if we were going out to eat. We told him yes. He asked. "Where are you going?"
We told him the place and he quickly replied, "No, let’s not go there, nobody goes there anymore, it’s too crowded."
Yogi was famous for his quotes, but I can tell you he was one of the smartest baseball men that I have ever known. Three times he was the American League MVP. He appeared in 14 World Series and has more World Series rings than anyone.
