Capping a very successful 12-2 season, the Logan County Lady Cougars freshmen team won the 13th District Freshmen Tournament at home near season’s end.

Coach George Vanderpool’s team beat Russellville 51-24 and Todd Central 53-26. Franklin-Simpson didn’t field a freshmen team in the tournament.

All 12 Lady Cougars scored in the win over RHS. Karrah Cron led the way with 15 points while Blayke Bingham and Brittany Garrett added 7 each.

Brooklyn Ray led RHS with 7 points. Eight of the 10 Lady Panthers scored. Coach Calvin Head did not use freshman Deshala LeBlanc, since she is so important to the varsity team.

Eleven of the dozen Lady Cougars scored against Todd. Abi Lindsey scored 10, Sarah Beth Hale 9 and Cron 8.

Amy Brumfield topped Todd’s scoring with 7 points and eight grader Breona Rose added 6. Another eighth grader, Jordan Weathers, also played for the Lady Rebels, who had won over RHS earlier in the day.

“Against Todd, we stuck to our game plan and played up tempo. Our full court pressure enabled us to pull away in the second half,” Vanderpool said.

The highlight of the season for Logan was beating a Bowling Green program, which had gone nine years without a loss. The only losses were to BGH by one and Allen County-Scottsville by five. Just as was the case with BGH, Logan split with AC-S.

“The freshmen team was well balanced team with seven different players leading the team in scoring in different games,” Vanderpool said. “We averaged over 44 points per game, putting up 50 or more in many games. We played an up-tempo game, trapping in the full court, rotating players in and out throughout the game.

“We had guard play from Sarah Beth Hale, Carlie Alvis, Hannah Goss, and Olivia Bouldin; good shooting from Blake Bingham and Karrah Cron; great defense from Brittany Garrett and Abi Lindsey and exceptional post play from Jamica Key, Hallie Borders, Rosie Kerchenski, and Jillian McLellan.”

Several of the freshmen were on this year’s varsity team with Lindsey one of the key reserves. The group is expected to be called on for large contributions next year, since all five starters on the Lady Cougar regional semifinalist squad were seniors.
