After suffering two close losses, the Logan County Cougars took it out on district opponent Todd Central Tuesday, beating the Rebels 31-1 to run their record to 4-2.
A two-run loss to regional favorite South Warren the day before may have been just as impressive for Coach Ethan Meguiar’s young team.
Logan 31, Todd Central 1
Cousins Austin Rayno and Jackson Campbell combined for 6 hits, 7 RBIs, 6 runs and reached base 11 times.
They weren’t alone, however, since 11 players combine for the 20 hits, 13 scored runs, 11 had RBIs, 6 walked and only 4 struck out.
Rayno totaled 4 runs, 3 hits, 3 RBIs, 2 stolen bases, 1 hit by a pitch, and a walk. Campbell’s numbers were 3 hits, 4 RBIs, 2 doubles, 2 runs, 1 hit by a pitch and 1 reached on an error. Dylan Penick had 4 each of RBIs and runs scored, 3 hits, and 1 reached on error. Bradley Taylor totaled 4 RBIs, 3 runs, 2 hits, 2 walks, a double, and a reached on an error.
Treys were wild for Kaleb Justice, who had 3 each of hits, runs, and RBIs along with 2 walks and a reached on an error. Third Bell added 2 hits, 2 RBIs, 3 runs, 1 hit by a pitch and 1 reached on an error.
Nick Wooden homered, walked, scored 2 runs and drove in a pair. Koby Wall had a hit, a walk, an RBI and scored twice. Michael Riley reached twice on errors, scored a run, reached on an error and added an RBI. Riley also stole 2 bases. D.J. Beard had a hit, walked and scored 2 runs. Hunter Crafton doubled. Jack Wright lofted a sacrifice fly. Ashton Ross scored a run.
They produced all that offense in just five innings.
Ethan Smock pitched three innings and got the win. He gave up the unearned run on one hit and 3 walks while striking out 6. Ross recorded all 6 outs in two innings on strikeouts and didn’t allow a hit.
Noah Bicksler managed the only Todd hit. He walked, as did Kevin Graves twice. Graves, who stole 3 bases, scored the run. Starting pitcher Connor Cole took the loss. Bicksler and Josh Gant were also among those on the mound.
South Warren 9, Cougars 7
The visiting Spartans scored three runs in the seventh inning to get the win. They had scored a pair of runs to start the game when Trey Kirtley doubled in a run and scored on a single. The Cougars duplicated that feat in the bottom of the inning with Campbell stroking an RBI double and scoring on a single by Taylor. Ross tied the game again in the second with a sacrifice fly. In the third inning, Wooden doubled in Taylor and Justice.
With the Cougars leading 7-6, Coach Chris Gage’s Spartans scored those three runs in the seventh. Cathan Shyrock and Noah Burns drove in the game winners.
Campbell and Wooden each got 2 of the Cougars’ 5 hits with Taylor adding the other. Bell and Taylor each scored two runs with Justice and Wooden adding 1 each. Justice walked twice with Taylor, Wooden and Crafton recording a walk each.
Ross hit another sacrifice fly, Campbell and Beard were hit by pitches, Rayno reached on two errors, and Riley and Taylor also reached on a South miscue.
Jordan Hendrix pitched the first five innings, but Wooden took the loss as the reliever. He pitched a scoreless sixth but was on the mound in that 3-run seventh. Hendrix struck out 6 and Wooden 3.
Shyrock was the winning pitcher in relief. Chandler Harnage was the starter and Ryder Litten came in to get an out, although he walked three Cougars. Kirtley had 3 hits for the winners.
Glasgow 5, Cougars 4
A sacrifice fly by Lane Norris in the sixth inning proved to be the game winner, as Coach Sam Royse’s Scotties handed the Cougars their first loss after three one-run wins to start the season.
The Cougars had 9 hits with Taylor and Penick getting 2 each. Campbell, Justice, Beard, Ross and Bell also singled. Rayno, Penick, Ross and Bell scored a run each. Bell had 2 RBIs with Rayno and Justice adding 1 each. Rayno worked the only walk off Scottie pitcher Norris. Dustin Asher got the win in relief.
James Kingery had 3 hits, including 2 doubles, for the winners with Dalton Shoemake, Pudge Morgan, Dylan Lane, Griffin Murphy and Norris adding 1 each.
Crafton was the starting pitcher for the Cougars with Tommy Krohn and Riley also working on the mound. Riley took the loss.
