Logan County jumped out to an impressive showing in the school's first-ever indoor track meet Saturday. Literally.

Senior Thomas Washington won both the long jump and the triple jump while classmate Moses McDonald finished third in the high jump at Henderson County High School Feb. 13. His triple jump of 43'5.7" was four and a half feet ahead of the second place finisher. Last spring he won the state outdoor title with a hop, skip and jump of 45'4". His winning distance in the long jump Saturday was 20'5", which was a foot and a half farther than the guy who placed second to him. Last year he took silver at state with a leap of 22'3". Washington finished third at state in the 400 meter run last June, but that wasn't one of his events at the indoor meet.

"Thomas is one of the five pre-season favorites to win the coveted Track and Field Athlete of the Year in Kentucky," says veteran LCHS track and cross country coach Greg Howard.. "We’ve had one other athlete from Logan County win that award in the past. Billy Taylor was the winner in 2001."

The top finisher for the Lady Cougars was freshman Claire Hopkins, who placed sixth in the 3000 meter run with a time of 13:57.1. She was one of sixth ninth graders to place for LCHS teams.

" Not a bad first time out when we haven’t had a chance to throw or jump yet," says Howard, who hopes to have about 100 runners and jumpers involved in the track program this spring when the school's basketball seasons end.
