Lady Panthers win 3 games on Saturday, finish 2nd at Cumberland County

The Russellville Lady Panthers put together a super day of softball Saturday in the R. Fred Capps Memorial Tournament at Burkesville, hosted by Cumberland County High School.

The visiting Lady Panthers of Russellville lost 10-1 to the host Lady Panthers of Cumberland County Friday, but that team has a 23-7 record with six more wins than the second highest total in the Fourth Region.

Then on Saturday, Coach Calvin Head’s RHS girls beat Adair County, Metcalfe County and Whitesville Trinity by a combined total of 26-1 to place second in the tournament.

RHS 11, Adair County 0

Macy Meacham pitched the shutout. She gave up 10 hits but no walks.

The RHS offense came through in a big way with Johnea Pendleton homering and Tonisha Hampton doubling. Tara Gilbert and Brooklyn Ray each had two hits and Cierra Collins added the seventh hit.

Allison McDaniel, Taryn Gray, Collins and Meacham each walked. Susanna Higgins and Meacham each stole a base.

Pendleton had two RBIs with Collins, Meacham, Higgins and Gray adding one each.

RHS 13, Trinity 1

The Lady Panthers scored the 13 runs on 16 hits, all singles. Ray, Pendleton and Hampton piled up three hits each. Collins and Meacham added a pair of hits apiece, and Gilbert, McDaniel and Higgins each added a hit. Gilbert, McDaniel, Hampton and Gray each walked.

Meacham and Higgins drove in three runs each with Pendleton picking up two RBIs. Ray, Hampton, and McDaniel plated a run each.

Gilbert pitched the win, giving up five hits and one walk while striking out three.

RHS 2, Metcalfe County 0

Meacham pitched her second shutout of the day. This time it was on a one-hitter. She didn’t walk a single Lady Hornet.

Hampton got three of the Lady Panthers’ five hits. Collins and Pendleton each added one. Pendleton and Hampton had RBIs. Collins and Gilbert scored the runs. Collins, Gilbert and Hampton each stole a base.

Cumberland 10, RHS 1

Gilbert shut out the host team in the first inning, but Cumberland County scored in each of the next four innings.

Pendleton got two hits with Gilbert and Hampton also hitting safely once. Hampton drove in Gilbert with the lone Russellville run.

Pendleton, Collins and Meacham were each named Player of the Game in the three wins.

The Lady Panthers improved their record to 14-16.
