The Logan County Cougars finished their regular season with a 26-8 record. A dozen of those wins have been on shutouts, including five of the final seven. They have outscored their opponents 209-88, giving up fewer than three runs a game. They only allowed 14 runs in their final 13 games. The Cougars won seven of their final eight games and went 15-4 in the Fourth Region.
Catching up on some Cougar baseball results before the district tournament starts Monday, in no particular order:
Cougars 7, Muhlenberg County 2
Jackson Campbell homered and reached twice on errors, driving in four runs and scoring two. Austin Rayno had two hits and walked. Bradley Taylor added two hits and scored a pair of runs. Michael Riley, Kaleb Justice and Nick Wooden also had hits. Taylor scored two runs with Rayno, Riley, Justice and Wooden also scoring. Justice drove in two runs.
While preparing for district play, Coach Ethan Meguiar used four pitchers, starter Jordan Hendrix, Riley, Tommy Krohn and Wooden. Hendrix was credited with the win.
Brennan Myers and Tyler Dortch pitched for Coach Brad Rogles’ Mustangs. Justin Jones had two hits and Jacob Whitmer doubled. Jones and Denver Jessup got the RBIs in the seventh with Hunter Combs and Will Boothe scoring.
Christian County 4, Cougars 2
Coach Greg Shelton’s Colonels avenged an earlier loss to the Cougars. The Cougars outhit the visiting Colonels 8-7, but Christian County made its hits count more. Shelton’s team scored two runs in the fifth inning on a triple by Dixon Craft to break a 2-2 tie.
Campbell and Dylan Penick had two hits each, with both of Campbell’s being doubles. Rayno, Riley, Taylor and Wooden got one each. Justice and Penick drove in the runs. Taylor and Jack Wright scored the runs.
Craft got the win, pitching a complete game. He walked only one Cougar.
Cougars 2, Barren County 0
Hendrix, a senior, pitched the shutout, on Senior Night at LCHS on Friday the 13th on four hits.
The Cougars managed only three hits. Rayno and Riley got one each, and Justice singled in Taylor and Jacob Smock. D.J. Beard worked the only walk off Trojan pitcher Andy Highbaugh.
Ellis Winninger doubled for Coach Steven Estes’ visitors with Andrew Hughes getting two hits.
Cougars 12, AC-S 9
Ethan Smock added another shutout to his and the team’s totals. He threw a one-hitter against the Patriots. The sophomore struck out nine and walked only two Patriots.
Seven Cougars got a hit each with Taylor and Justice doubling. Rayno, Campbell, Beard, Wright and Third Bell added the other hits. Justice, Beard and Wright each scored twice with Rayno, Taylor, Campbell, Jacob Smock, Penick and Bell also crossing home plate. Penick drew two of the five walks.
Wright and Bell each drove in two runs with Riley, Taylor, and Justice getting one each. Rayno reached on two Trojan errors with Campbell and Justice also reaching on miscues. The Cougars played errorless baseball.
Coach Scott Stamper’s Patriots were never competitive in the game.
Cougars 11, Calloway County 0
Campbell doubled in the first and third innings and singled in the fourth during this five-inning game. Campbell finished three for three with two RBIs and two runs scored. Justice also had three hits. Bell doubled while Rayno, Riley and Penick each singled.
Jacob Smock joined Rayno, Riley and Campbell in scoring two runs. Rayno, Campbell, Bell, Nate Woodall and Ashton Ross each walked. Rayno had a sacrifice fly and stole two bases.
Krohn put together a pitching jewel. He hurled a one-hit, one-walk shutout while facing only two batters over the minimum.
Cougars 7, Calloway 0
Beard and Riley teamed on pitching a second shutout against the Lakers in this Saturday doubleheader at Murray. Beard was leading 6-0 after six innings on a two-hitter, but he had thrown 103 pitches. Pitching Coach Kyle Wall brought in Riley for the seventh, and he allowed one hit and no runs among the four batters he faced.
Taylor went three for four while Campbell had two hits again. Wright stroked a two-run double. Rayno and Justice also got hits. Campbell walked twice, meaning he reached base in all of his eight plate appearances on the day. Justice had a sacrifice fly. Beard, Wright and Wooden walked. Koby Wall, Penick and Beard reached on errors.
Cougars 3, Glasgow 2
Campbell singled in his first cousin Rayno with the winning run in the seventh inning for this win matching two of the perennial powerhouse programs in the Fourth Region. Coach Ethan Meguiar’s team had gone into its last at-bat trailing 2-1.
Rayno and Taylor had two hits each with Riley, Campbell, Justice, Beard and Bell getting one each. Justice had singled in Taylor in the first inning. Wall scored the third run.
Hendrix pitched the win, giving up the two runs on seven hits and a walk while fanning four Scotties. Lane Norris took the loss for Coach Sam Royse’s team. He gave up nine hits and a walk, but none of the runs were earned. Hendrix needed 17 fewer pitches than did Norris, and 55 of his 87 pitches were strikes.
James Kingery and Dalton Shoemake each had two hits for Glasgow. Kingery, the leadoff hitter, scored both runs.
Cougars 4, Grayson County 1
Hendrix pitched this win, too, allowing no earned runs on five hits and no walks. Gage Askridge took the loss for Grayson.
Rayno drove in all the runs Logan would need in the fifth inning. In the sixth, Penick singled in Jacob Smock in the sixth inning, and then Bell singled in Penick.
Taylor finished with two hits while Riley joined Penick, Rayno and Bell with singles. Penick scored two runs with Smock and Wall accounting for the other two. Justice and Penick got the only walks off Akridge and Riley Mudd. Braxton Hodges gave up two hits in the seventh but no runs. Mudd singled in Landon Nichols with the home team’s lone run.
Cougars 3, Breckinridge County 0
Beard was the starting and winning pitcher for the Cougars. He went the first five innings, allowing no runs on two hits and three walks while striking out five. Ethan Smock got the save, working the last two scoreless innings. He gave up two hits but no walks and struck out three in the game played at Bowling Green Ballpark.
Riley had three hits as the leadoff batter, all singles. Campbell, Penick, Justice and Beard joined him with singles. Campbell was credited with the only RBI. Bell, Justice and Riley scored the runs.
Cougars 12, Greenwood 2
Sophomore third baseman Taylor had a great offensive game. He tripled and doubled twice, accumulating three each of RBIs and runs. Campbell also had three hits, including a double, drove in two runs and scored one.
Beard had two hits while Rayno, Wright, Justice and Penick added one each. Rayno had two RBIs with Riley, Beard, Penick and Bell getting one each. Justice walked twice.
Connor Cline and Scotty Harris managed the Gators’ only hits and the lone RBIs. Tyler Cook, Parker Farley, Clayton Mattison and Adam Schneller all pitched for Coach Jason Jaggers’ Gators with Schneller the only one who was effective.
Cougars 2, Owensboro 0
Beard pitched magnificently on a one-hit shutout. He walked two and struck out four. He threw strikes on 53 of her 88 pitches.
The Cougars needed strong pitching, since they were having trouble hitting Red Devils pitchers Richard Jacques and Lance Lewis. The four hits they got were singles by Taylor, Justice, Wooden and Penick. Two errors did OHS in, since Logan got no RBIs.
Taylor and Justice scored the runs. Riley, Justice, Penick and Bell walked. Campbell and Beard reached on those errors.
Braxton French managed the lone hit for the losers.
Cougars 5, Hancock County 0
Taylor, Rayno, Hunter Crafton, Wooden and Beard all doubled in this win in the Kelly Russell Classic. Campbell, Riley and Justice singled. Taylor and Beard each had two RBIs and Campbell one. Rayno was hit by a pitch and Penick walked.
Crafton, who was later lost for the season later in a physical education class accident, pitched the shutout on seven hits and two walks while striking out six.
Garret Pate and Tyler O’Bryan each got hits for Coach Chris Pate’s Hornets. Jacob White, Tanner Singleton and Tyler Kratzer added hits.
