Over 3,000 young people in the fourth through twelfth grades descended on the Louisvilles Convention Center for the 2010 NASP State Archery Tournament on March 22-23.. NASP Archery is divided into three divisions: Elementary (grades four through six), Middle (grades seven and eight), and High School (grades nine through twelve).
In the Elementary division Adairville Archery took third place with a score of 3,177, Trigg County was second with a 3,238 and Shopville took home the Championship with a score of 3,243. Lewisburg Elementary was close behind Adairville, finishing in fourth place with a 3,121 score, giving the home teams two of the top five spots in the state.
Adairville was led by Alex Hughes, shooting a 283; Austin Rayno was close with a 282 score. Alex finished third overall in the Elementary boys individual competition and Austin fourth. For the Adairville girls, Christian Lynch took top honors with a 276, placing her fourth in the girls' individual scores. Christian joined the team this year and has become one of the top girls in the state in only a few months of practicing. Laura Hendricks was close behind Christian with a 272 score.
Lewisburg’s fourth place finish was impressive, considering they only had three sixth graders in their top 12 scores, which will make them a favorite to challenge for the top spot in next year's state tournament. They were led this year by fifth grader Blake Taylor, who had a 281 score, sixth overall in the boys, followed by another fifth grader,Katylin Foster, with a 277 score. Katylin tied for the second highest female score in the state.
In the Middle School Lewisburg finished twelfth with 3,124, led by Lewisburg’s Marah Harris, who was sixth overall with a 284, and Adairville sixteenth with 3065, Adairville was led by Jenny Colbert’s 271, Chandlers was twenty-first with a score of 3,029.. D. J. Lee was Chandlers' top male shooter with a 268 and Cheyenne Brown was top female with a 258.
Logan County High is beginning to show the positive effects of a Middle School feeder program as its Archery team finished sixth overall with a 3349 score, only 45 points behind state champion Meade County, which finished with a 3394 score. LCHS is a young team with a great future ahead of them; they have only two seniors in their top 12 scorers at state. Coached by Jeannie Moore, the young Cougars are making a name for themselves across the state. They were led by Dusty Yates and Dustin Crafton, both shooting 289. Danielle Wilkerson was the top female shooter for LCHS with a 281 score.
Next stop will be the 2010 National NASP Tournament, which will be in Louisville at the Fair and Expo Center on May 8. Planners are expecting approximately 6,000 archers to be present for this year's tournament, topping last year's record by over a thousand students. Wish your favorite team good luck as they prepare to set even more records for Logan County Archery.
