RHS Seniors to host Black
and Gold Holiday Market
The 2022 Black and Gold Holiday Market will be hosted by the Russellville High School seniors on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 9-3 at RHS. Craft, flea market and direct sales vendors will be set up. For more information, contact Senior Sponsor Julianna Link at the school either by phone or email.

Final Farmers' Market set Saturday
Saturday morning, the final Logan County Farmers’ Market of 2022 and the last time to redeem Senior and WIC vouchers will be held. Vendors will offer acorn squash, apple bread, apple butter, apples, butternut squash, cabbage, candy onions, carrots, cauliflower, gourds, mums, pear preserves, potatoes, pumpkins (pie, stackers and carving), sweet potato bread, sweet potatoes, tomatoes (red, yellow and green), zucchini and more. Hours are 7:30-noon.

Munday Hall Dedication Friday morning
The formal dedication of Munday Hall will be held Friday at 9:30 a.m. on the campus of Western Kentucky University. The building has been renamed to honor Margaret Munday, an Auburn native who taught music in the Logan County Schools for over three decades. She was the first African American student at Western. Fall Block Party for Russellville students Saturday
Students in the Russellville Schools are invited to a Fall Block Party in the Rhea Stadium Parking Lot Saturday from 4-6 p.m. Halloween costume contests will be held for all grades along with food, hayrides, caramel apple kits, a photo booth, face painting, music, and Trunk or Treat.

Trunk or Treat sessions
After sponsoring a Trunk or Treat event at Logan Memorial Hospital Thursday, the Russellville Police Department will hold two similar events on Halloween Day Monday. The first will be at Stevenson Elementary School from 1-3 p.m. and at the Russellville Fire Department from 5-7.

Trunk or Treat planned at Auburn Park
Trunk or Treat will be held Sunday from 6-7:30 p.m.at the Auburn Park Football Field. Those attending can enjoy candy, games, face paint, smores and popcorn. A food truck will be available for pizza sales.

Dental Lab ribbon cutting Friday
The Logan County Chamber of Commerce will conduct a ribbon cutting for the new home of Russellville Dental Laboratory at 206 Sam Walton Drive at noon Friday. There will also be an open house.

East edges Lady Cougars at region
The Logan County Lady Cougars trailed Warren East two sets to one going into the fourth set of the Fourth Region Volleyballs semifinals Wednesday night. The Lady Cougars came back to win the fourth set 25-21 to tie the sets at 2-2, but lost 15-12 in the fifth set. East advances to Thursday's finals while Logan ends its season with a 30-9 record, including the program's 20th straight 13th District championship and their first Class 2A state championship.

Lady Cougars win over
Greenwood, to face East
The Logan County Lady Cougars advanced to Wednesday’s regional semifinals in volleyball by beating long-time nemesis Greenwood 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-20) Monday for their 30th win of the season. They take on Warren East at 6 p.m. at South Warren. The winner will move on to Thursday’s regional championship match. Athletic Director Greg Howard says as soon as he gets the link he will announce how fans can buy tickets online.

RHS Band State Sendoff set Friday
Just before the Russellville Panther Band heads to state competition Friday, Director Trevor Cardwell’s band will present a community performance at 4 p.m. at Rhea Stadium. The competition will be held Saturday in Lexington.

Final Farmers' Market sessions this week
This is the final week of the 2022 Logan County Farmers' Market. Sessions remain Tuesday from 3-6 p.m. and Saturday morning from 7:30 until noon. It's also the final week for redeeming Senior and WIC vouchers. They can only be used at the Farmers' Market during regular hours. They can be used on fruits and vegetables, including pumpkins, which are edible. Tomatoes and other summer veggies are still available. The Market is located under the pavilion behind the Logan County Extension Office.

RHS Panther Band qualifies for state
The Russellville High School Panther Band placed fourth out of 10 bands Saturday at the KMEA Regional Competition hosted by Warren East High School. The band will be going to KMEA Semifinals next weekend in Lexington for the chance to compete the same night at the Finals Competition. Panther Band competed against nine other 2A bands, including the top three placing bands--Trigg County, Hancock County and Glasgow. The top six bands from each class advanced onto the semifinals. Kirby Funeral Services Fall Cruise In today
The third annual Kirby Funeral Services Fall Cruise In will be held from 1-5 Sunday afternoon in the funeral home parking lot at the intersection of the Bowling Green and Franklin roads on Russellville’s East End. Clay Bilyeu, who conducts similar events on the Carrico Park Square, will be providing leadership and music for those attending. Food trucks will be available. Justin and Rebecca Kirby are the owners.

Ryan Rayno sets Cougar
season rushing record
Senior Ryan Rayno set a new school season rushing record Friday in the Logan County Cougars' 42-17 district romp at Calloway County. He averaged 17 yards per carry and gained 170 yards and 3 touchdowns on just 10 carries. That's slightly above his 165 yards per game action, which is second best in the state in Class 4A. Rayno has gained 1,493 yards, despite being held out late in several lopsided wins. Friday, the coaches let nine Cougars who are primarily linemen or defenders carry the ball after the Cougars started a running clock again at 42-3. Rayno will have at least two more games to add to his total. Coach Todd Adler's Cougars (8-1) will close out the regular season Friday against visiting South Warren and then begin playoff action on Nov. 4.

Panthers to take on visiting
Rockets for district top seed
The Russellville Panthers will try to win their Class 1A district championship for the second year in a row Friday night when they entertain Crittenden County at Rhea Stadium. Both teams are 1-0 in the three-team district, having each beaten Fulton County. The KHSAA ratings make the 4-4 Rockets a two-touchdown favorite over the 1-7 Panthers. Both teams will have home games in the playoffs in two weeks. The game will be broadcast live on WRUS with Countdown to Kickoff beginning at 6:30 p.m.

District champion Logan to open
with Greenwood in region
Following sweeping a good Todd Central team 3-0 for their 20th consecutive district championship, the Logan County Lady Cougars will open regional play against familiar foe Greenwood. The Lady Cougars and Lady Gators have met almost every year at region, including the 2003 regional finals when Logan started this remarkable streak. This time Coach Caleb Sheffield’s Lady Cougars are favored. According to KHSAA ratings, the 29-8 Lady Cougars, who beat GHS 3-1 during the season, are the second-best team in the region, and the Lady Gators (13-19) are rated eighth. The match will be played Monday at 7 p.m. at South Warren, which didn’t reach region. Todd Central plays regional favorite Bowling Green Tuesday.

Auburn Zombie 5K set Saturday
The Fourth Annual Auburn Zombie 5K Run/Walk will be held this Saturday, with check-in at 4 p.m. and the race beginning at 5. Costumes are encouraged and an award will be given to te best overall costume. The fee is $30 per person. It begins at the Auburn Park Pavilion. Contact Auburn Tourism for more information.

Lady Rebels hope to stop
Logan's championship streak
The Logan County Lady Cougars will try to win their 20th straight 13th District Volleyball championship today when they take on Todd Central at 6 p.m. at Russellville High School. Both teams won district openers 3-0 Monday with Coach Caleb Sheffield's Lady Cougars running their record to 28-8 by beating RHS while Todd Central knocked off Franklin-Simpson. Stephen Lyne was either head coach or the top assistant on the first 16 championships for LCHS but now is the bench boss for the Lady Rebels. Logan is rated second in the Fourth Region with an RPI of .65687 while the Lady Rebels (24-10) are rated sixth with an RPI of .58290. Both teams will advance to region.

Two members of Logan County’s district championship football team led the state in a couple of categories going into this weekend’s action. Rayno had the most rushing yards with 1,321. Bilyeu has kicked 34 extra points of the 38 she has attempted. The 7-1 Cougars have a bye this weekend.

Panthers to face state champ
Pikeville again on Saturday
A rematch of last year's state Class 1A state football finalists will be played at another neutal site Saturday. The Russellville Panthers will try to reverse the outcome of that championship game in Lexington when they take on perennial powerhouse Pikeville at Somerset, located between Russellville in the west and Pikeville from the far eastern part of Kentucky. Pikeville is ranked number one in the state again this year with a 5-2 record and a Kentucky High School Athletic Association RPI of .76794. RHS is ranked 25th with a 1-6 record and an RPI of .41607. The game begins at 1 p.m. Russellville time and will be aired live on all of WRUS' platforms.

At Saturday’s Logan County Farmers’ Market, patrons will find many items associated with fall, such as pumpkins, mums, gourds, sweet potatoes, Indian corn, Indian fingers, turnips, mustard greens, acorn squash, butternut squash, fruit jams and jellies, and cabbage. Add to that tomatoes, onions, greenbeans, squash, zucchini, candy onions, bell peppers, a variety of meats and delicious sweets and pastries. Senior and WIC vouchers are still being accepted. Auburn Halloween Parade Oct. 29
Auburn’s Inaugural Halloween Parade will begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29. The Hold Your Horses band will play live music afterwards. Food and wine vendors will be available. Awards will be presented for the overall best decorated floats and costume categories.

Cougars beat M-NH, win district
The Logan County Cougars wrapped up home field advantage in district playoffs with a 35-18 win over visiting Madisonville-North Hopkins. The final touchdown by the Cougars came on a run by JunVontre Dillard. Kyra Bilyeu went 5 for 5 kicking extra points. Key players Zane Batten, Hunter Holloway, Dayton Blackford and Ryan Rayno suffered injuries during the game and Jack Delaney sat it out with a collarbone injury. They have some time to heal, since the 7-1 Cougars don't play next week.

Cougars lead Maroons 28-6 at half
In what was expected to be a close game between two good teams, the Logan County Cougars led visiting Madisonville-North Hopkins 28-6 at the half. Quarterback Davin Yates has thrown for well over 100 yards and two touchdowns, senior running back Ryan Rayno has over 100 yards with a touchdown, and Zane Batten and JunVontre Dillard have caught touchdown passes. Kyra Bilyeu, the state Class 4A leader in conversion kicks, is 4 for 4 on PATs, and she is also kicking off.

RHS Meet and Greet set tonight
All Russellville High School alumni and friends are invited to the annual Meet and Greet today in the school’s lobby. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the Class of 1972 will be honored, celebrating their 50th Anniversary at 6 p.m. The RHS Band will provide background music and door prizes will be awarded. All classes celebrating their reunions are especially invited. It’s a chance to see old friends in one place. There is no charge. This is sponsored by the Russellville Alumni Association. Three-term magistrate
Jack Crossley passes away
Jack Crossley, who has represented South Logan on Logan Fiscal Court for 12 years, died at his Olmstead area home this weekend after a long and courageous battle with illness. The 77-year-old native Logan Countian was retired from BTR and worked for South Logan Water Association. He is a U.S. Army Veteran. He is survived by his wife of over half a century, Sharon Smotherman Crossley, two daughters, two grandchildren and his sister. Funeral services will be conducted in Russellville Thursday afternoon.

Polly Steenbergen accepts state award
After Executive Director Polly Steenbergen was named to a state board last Wednesday, the Logan County Chamber of Commerce was awarded the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Executives 2022 Events Excellence Award for the 2021 Logan County Tobacco & Heritage Festival. Steenbergen attended the KCCE Conference and awards dinner where she was appointed to the KCCE Board of Directors.
