Reception set Friday for Maci Venable, new Logan 4-H Agent

A reception will be held Friday afternoon for Maci McCuiston Venable, who has been named the new 4-H agent for Logan County. A graduate of Todd County Central High School and Murray State University, she is from Trenton in Todd County. Her husband Justin works at Precision Strip at South Union. They became parents this summer. She knows the 4-H/Youth Development position well, since her mother, LeeAnn McCuiston, has served in the same role in Todd County. The public is invited to the reception from 2-4 p.m. at the Logan County Extension Office.

Logan Band alumni march in London New Year’s Day Parade

Nine alumni of the Logan County High School Band helped usher in the new year in London, England. They marched as members of the WKU Marching Band on New Year’s Day. They are Dawson Rodgers, Paige Copen, Connor Saylor, Trenton Fears, Mollie Crawford, Lane Bibb, Hannah Britt, Wyat Reading and Evan Dana.

Basketball Clash of the Cats moved up a day

The first basketball Clash of the Cats for 2025 has been moved up from Friday to tomorrow, Thursday, Jan. 9, because of heavy snow forecasted for Friday. Russellville Athletic Director Ryan Davenport has announced. Since the first of two meetings between RHS and Logan County is at RHS this year, it’s officially named Mullen-Meguiar Classic in honor of two former Panther basketball coaches, retired Athletic Director Wayne Mullen and retired Principal Mickey Meguiar. According to Greg Owens, the scheduled Hall of Fame inductions will be moved to a later date. Tipoff for the girls game is 6 p.m. with the boys to follow. WRUS will broadcast the games live.

Funeral services for Larry Dilliha delayed 2 hours

Summers and Son Funeral Home has announced that funeral services for Larry Dilliha will be delayed two hours until 1 p.m. this Saturday. His obituary appears on The Logan Journal.

Lady Cougars hold off RHS 69-59

In a Clash featuring a majority of young players on both teams, the Logan County Lady Cougars (7-6) hit 8 of 14 free throw attempts in the final 2:10 of the game to beat homestanding Russellville 69-59 Thursday. Along the way, Lady Panthers Ja’eda Poindexter, M’Riyah Boyd and DeMyiah Allen all fouled out. Coach Dedra Adler’s team led from 8-12 points most of the game, but RHS (1-13) cut the lead to four on three different plays, the last at 61-57. Legna Taylor scored RHS’ only basket in the last three minutes. Reese Wetton led LCHS with 19 points while Brenley Adler had 18, TaKyiah Mason 12 and Addison Holloway 11. Allen led RHS with 13 while Mattie Kimbrough added 12 and Mariyah Merriweather 11. The 59 points were the most Coach Orlando Hayden’s Lady Panthers have scored in their losses.

Logan County Schools call for NTI Day Friday

With heavy snowfall having been predicted tomorrow morning, Logan County Schools Superintendent Dan Costellow has announced that all seven schools will not meet in person Friday. This will be NTI Day #4.

Switzer’s final heroics pay off for Cougars

Three sophomores and two juniors provided huge late heroics in the boys Clash of the Cats Thursday. Sophomore Davis Switzer made the biggest play for Logan County in a 63-61 win at Russellville. Junior Jaxon Tichenor made a steal for the Cougars, who were leading by three in the last half minute. But Panther sophomore Jamarion Gardner drew an offensive foul from leading Cougar scorer Samson Hightower, fouling him out in the process. TK Darden, another RHS sophomore, hit a 3-pointer to tie the game with 17 seconds remaining. A third tenth grader, Logan’s Davis Switzer, took the ensuing inbounds pass the length of the court for the go-ahead layup with 4.2 seconds remaining. Then Cougar junior Damani Goodloe sealed the win by stealing the ball. Logan’s Hightower and Russellville’s Too Too McKeage each scored 21 points. Darden scored 11 and Noah Stovall 10 for the Panthers (4-10). Scoring 8 each for the winners (5-7) were Brady Hinton, Nick Blann, Nick Thomas and Switzer. It was Coach Josh Frick’s Cougars’ third straight win.

Reception for new 4-H agent moved to Friday

A reception will be held Friday afternoon for Maci McCuiston Venable, who has been named the new 4-H agent for Logan County. It was scheduled for Jan. 10 but has been delayed because of snow. It will be at her new place of work, the Logan County Extension Office, from 2-4 p.m.

KY-TN Grain Day to be in Logan again

The annual KY-TN Game Day will be held at the Logan County Extension Office this year. It will be Feb. 87 from 7:30 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. Speakers will be Dr. Travis Legletter and Dr. Matt Dixon, both from UK, and Dr. Aaron Smith, Dr. Forbes Walker and Dr. Heather Kellly, all of UT. Home-grown author Tammy Oberhausen to appear at Logan library

Russellville High School graduate Tammy Oberhausen has made dozens of stops around January 16, 2025the state the last few months promoting her highly popular first novel, The Evolution of the Gospelettes. A Bowling Green resident now, she is coming home to Russellville Tuesday for a Meet the Author at Logan County Public Library. She will be at the library from 5-7 p.m.

Local talent featured at library this week

From Logan County Public Library: Local talent is on display this week as author, Tammy Oberhausen, visits us to sign copies of her book The Evolution of the Gospelettes: A Novel, and local artist Ashley Bull teaches us how to paint a lovely winter scene at Make-It-Monday. Teens can learn to make winter bird feeders this week, join us for independent craft time, board games, video games, and D&D! Children and their grownups are invited to join us for Winter Adventures at Storytime and come hang out at SnackCraft for ... you guessed it: snacks and crafting.

Logan Appreciation Luncheon Feb. 6

Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell will be the guest speaker at the Logan County Agriculture Appreciation Luncheon at the Extension Office on Feb. 6. The food line will open at 11:30 a.m. Anyone associated with local agriculture is invited to attend. Reservations are encouraged at 270-726=6323. A 4-H Ham Auction will be held along with 4-H and FFA SAE Trade Shows.

Braxton Meguiar named Preseason All-American

Former Logan County Cougar Braxton Meguiar has been named the NAIA Preseason All-American second baseman by the NAIA-Baseball Coaches Association All-America Committee. He is beginning his fourth season as a starter for Georgia Gwinnett College and has played in three World Series so far. He was Second Team All-America last year. Gwinnett has three Preseason All Americans listed. Joining Meguiar are shortstop Jackson Cobb and starting pitcher Ben Harris. Only Reinhardt College joins Gwinnett with multiple honorees with two. Another Kentuckian was honored. as University of the Cumberlands outfielder Charlie Muntz was named for the third straight preseason.

Registration for spring soccer beginning

Russellville Parks and Recreation will hold registration for spring soccer Jan. 21-Feb. 20 for ages 4-12 at the Recreation Center on Winter Street. Players must be 4 by Feb. 28 and no older than 12 during the season, which goes through April. Registration can be during office hours or from 2-7 p.m. January 21, 23, or 28 or February 4, 13 or 20. The fee is $40.

Cougars ride running clock to 74-40 win at Todd

Earning a running clock very early in the fourth quarter at 72-33, the Logan County Cougars blasted Todd Central on the road Friday. Their 74-40 win improved their record to 8-8 and 2-0 in the 13th District. They led only 36-22 at the half, but Coach Josh Frick’s Cougars dominated the third quarter 22-6. Sansom Hightower led the Cougars with 20 points while Jaxon Tichenor scored 14 points and Nick Thomas 10. Not far out of double figures were Tyler Johnson with 8 and Olijah Woodard with 7. John Ross Cardwell led Coach Walter McCombs’ Rebels with 15 points. Brett Harris scored 6, Jayden Glass 5 and Hunter Johnson, Connor Holder and Antavion Shemwell with 4 each. This was the fifth straight win for the Cougars.

Lady Cougar defense stifles Lady Rebels

The Logan County Lady Cougars held homestanding Todd Central scoreless for more than the first six minutes of the game Friday. Coach Dedra Adler’s team parlayed that start into an impressive 52-28 win over the Lady Rebels with Brenley Adler & Ta’Kylah Mason each scoring 18. The girls played the second game on this evening.

MLK Unity Walk Celebration set Wednesday

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Walk Celebration in Logan County will be Wednesday, not Monday, the national MLK birthday holiday. The Logan County celebration Wednesday will begin at the Jesus Church of Russellville, 637 East Fifth Street, beginning at 8:15 a.m. for those who want to walk. They will come to the Historic Courthouse and be joined by others for presentations by Dr. Charles Neblett and Dr. Wayne Tuckson, host of KET’s “Kentucky Health Matters.”

Funeral services for Thad ‘Fish’ Covington set at RHS today

At noon today, funeral services will be held at Russellville High School for Thaddeus James "Fish" Covington, Jr., 63, of Franklin. He was one of the best athletes on the Panther team to win the program’s first state football championship in 1980. He had been in a wheelchair in recent years but still kept his winning smile and love of cooking. He often set up his food truck at events in Russellville. Survivors include his children, Thaddeus T. Covington, Monisha Todd, Deyonna B. Nolan, JohnQuesha D. Wells, Darone A. Covington, Tasia J. Covington, and Teondre K. Covington; his siblings, Gayle (Jackie) Hampton, Karen Covington, Thelma Gaston, and Annette Covington; and his 28 grandchildren. Visitation at RHS begins at 10 a.m.

LCHS Law Club competes at regional

Logan County High School Law Club members attended Kentucky High School Mock Trial Regional Competition in Owensboro Kentucky on January 25-26. They are Luke Arnold, A.K. Davis, Finch Mayhew, Cash Spurlin, Caris Taylor, Kiera Ledford, Kai Craig, Kylie Thomas, Lily Rudd, Gunnar Groom, Alex Siletchnik, Jakob Morr, Brett White, Trey Costello and Graison McIntyre. Club sponsors are Ann-Meguiar Bouldin, Olivia Bouldin and Jackie Craig.

Amiyah Collier playing for Vol State

A’Miyah Collier, one of the most outstanding and productive female athletes in Russellville High School sports history, has transferred to Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin, Tenn., after having played softball her first college season at the University of Central Arkansas. “She is playing shortstop and batting third for Vol State,” says RHS Athletic Director and head softball coach Ryan Davenport. Collier, who also had a superb basketball career for the Lady Panthers, was Fourth Region Player of the Year in softball.

A group of Adairville students attended the FCA Leadership Day Camp at First Baptist Church in Bowling Green Tuesday. They participated in small group sessions, sports activitiesand had the opportunity to interact through meets and talks. This team will be launching our newly founded FCA Club at Adairville. Lewisburg students place at District Governor’s Cup

Lewisburg School’s Academic Team placed third Overall and second in Quick Recall in District Governor’s Cup competition at Auburn recently. Individuals placing were Addi McReynolds- 1st in Language Arts, Will Gates- 5th in Math, Alex Dunn- 5th in Science, Josh Scruggs- 5th in Arts in Humanities, and Morrison Womack- 3rd in Social Studies. Educators added to Logan Library board

Two new members have been added to the Logan County Public Library Board of Directors, both of whom work in the local schools. David Guffy is Chief Information Officer for the Russellville Independent School District. Kelly Lewis is assistant principal at Lewisburg School. They were sworn in by Judge-executive Phil Baker. “We are so grateful to the community members who are willing to give their time to help keep our library running and innovating to better serve Logan County,” the library’s post says.

Cougars sweep Clash at home

Both Logan County teams beat visiting Russellville Friday to guarantee themselves favorable seeding in the 13th District Tournament. Coach Dedra Adler’s Lady Cougars jumped out to a 28-4 lead in the opener. SaNiyah McCoy gave Coach Orlondo Hayden’s Lady Panthers a lift late in the half, but Coach Dedra Adler’s team led 28-10 and 47-18 at the second and third stops. Ta’Kiyah Mason scored 7 straight points in the fourth quarter and Logan won 63-24 to run their record to 12-9 overall and 3-1 in the district. Brenley Adler and Mason each scored 17 and Kyla Bilyeu 14 for the winners. McCoy led RHS with over half the team’s points at 14. Coach Adler was able to use Alexia Perez Gomez, Abigail Bibb, Britton Wetton, Macie Clinard and other young players in the game.

The boys game had been tied four times when Brady Hinton hit a free throw and Davis Switzer a 3-pointer to take the lead at 21-17. The Cougars never trailed after that and won 67-52 to raise their district record to 4-0. Switzer scored 27, Samson Hightower 15, Hinton 11 and Nick Thomas 10 for Coach Josh Frick’s team. Even more important was the Cougar defense. With Hinton concentrating on Too Too McKeage and Damani Goodloe working on Jamarion Gardner with lots of help from other Cougars, the usual scoring leaders on Coach Phil Todd’s Panthers were held to 9 points each. Jerius Coleman topped RHS with 14 points and Kein Gray added 8.
