Alvia and Too Too RHS Homecoming royalty

To conclude a memorable week of Homecoming activities, Russellville High School crowned its royalty on Friday, Jan. 24, during a district doubleheader against Todd Central. Crowned Homecoming Queen and King were Alivia Blakey and Octavious 'Too Too' McKeage. The Princess and Prince were juniors Jae'da Poindexter and Jerius Coleman

Cougars win squeaker at East

In a game that was rated a tossup before the opening tipoff, the Logan County Cougars won 72-67 at Warren East Tuesday, leaving them both with 13-9 records. The Cougars hit 56.7 percent of their two-point shots (30 of 53) and 62.9 percent of their free throws. Samson Hightower hit 6 of 8 two-point shots and 3 of 4 free throws, finishing with 18 points. Davis Switzer went 6 of 9 and 4 of 5 in those two categories for 16 points. Brady Hinton scored 11 points and led the team in rebounding with 8 while Switzer had 7 boards and Hightower 6. Nick Blann added 10 points and Damani Goodloe 8. East was led in scoringby Brenden Bratcher with 21, Kaleb Prince with 15 and Jacob Miller with 14.

Six Logan athletes to sign with colleges Feb. 28

A half dozen Logan County High School athletes will sign to play four different sports for four different colleges on the high school’s first mass Signing Day of the year on Friday, Feb. 28, in the Main Gym, beginning at 9:25 a.m. They are Olijah Woodard & Kam Burr withKentucky Wesleyan football, Tate McLean & Tripp Wadlington with Campbellsvillebaseball, Phillip Thompson with Midway archery, and Addie Cartas with Brescia softball. Athletic Director Todd Adler says a second signing day will be held later in the semester.

LCHS & RHS girls fall in district games

Both the Logan County Lady Cougars and Russellville Lady Panthers lost district basketball games Friday on special evenings. At Logan’s homecoming, LCHS fell behind Todd Central by nine points in the third quarter as Lady Rebel JaMya Kay hit 4 three-pointers, cut the lead to one on 8 straight points by senior Ta’Kyiah Mason, but saw Todd’s Jordyn Shemwell hit all 6 of her free throws in the fourth quarter for a 50-44 Todd win. Mason scored 17, Brenley Adler 10, and Reese Wetton 8 for LCHS. Alexis Taylor led Todd with 21 points while Kay added 17 and Shemwell 9.

Powerful Franklin-Simpson won 65-27 on Russellville’s Senior Night. All-state candidate LaReesha Cawthorn led the winners with 20 points and Chloe Smith added 12. M’Riyah Boyd topped RHS with 9 points and DeMiyah Allen added 7.

High-achieving sisters to be Feedback guests Wednesday

Two sisters who grew up in Russellville and now hold doctorates and teach in universities two-thirds of the breadth of the continent apart will jointly be guests on WRUS’s Feedback program Wednesday.  Dr. Jitana Benton-Lee and Dr. Jikesha Benton-Johnson—the daughters of Jackie and Jimmy ‘Shine’ Benton—will be guests of Chris McGinnis on the talk/call-in program. See their credentials in the accompanying graphic or in an earlier News story on The LoJo. Katherine Hart, who arranges for Black History Month speakers for the observance, says the appearance of Lexington attorney and councilwoman Shayla Lynch on WRUS has been rescheduled for next Tuesday, Feb. 18.

Registration open for Logan County Little League

Online registration is available for Logan County Little League. The league is for boys and girls, ages 8 to 12, based on your age as of Aug. 31. The online form can be found on the Logan County Little League Baseball Facebook page. Logan County Little League Evaluations will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22, beginning at 9 a.m., at the Logan County High School Indoor Facility. Sign-ups will be accepted at the evaluations. Registration continues for Adairville Baseball League

Although in-person registration had to be canceled today because of flooded roads, another week of online registration continues. Six divisions are being offered: teeball for girls and boys ages 3-4, both coach pitch baseball and softball for ages 5-8, and kid pitch softball and kid pitch baseball for ages 9-12. RHS Baseball tryouts Tuesday

Tryouts for Russellville High School Baseball will be held Tuesday, Feb. 18. From 3:30-5:30 at the Russellville High School Sports Facility. Players must have a current sports physical and wear tennis shoes and shorts or sweatpants. Athletes involved in a winter sport can arrange for a different tryout date. Funeral services for David Clayton delayed for weather

Funeral arrangements for David Clayton have been delayed two days because of severe weather concerns, Kirby Funeral Services Russellville has announced. Visitation now will be from 12 to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22, in the chapel of Kirby Funeral Services Russellville with Pastor Colby Barnett officiating services at 1 p.m. with burial to follow in Greenwood Cemetery in Russellville. Original LCHS faculty member Doug Riley passes away

Douglas Riley, who was a member of the opening day faculty at Logan County High School in 1982-83 and pastored churches in Logan and four nearby counties for 55 years, died Feb. 15. He was the husband of the late Jean Drake Riley of Auburn, and many of their survivors are descendants of the Drake family in Logan County, including Jean’s sisters, Lavelle Meguiar and Joyce Joiner. The Rileys may be best known as the parents of their highly successful basketball-coaching sons, Tim Riley and Steve Riley. Among their proudest nights would be the brothers coaching against each other in the Fourth Region finals, Tim’s winning the state championship at Warren Central, and Steve’s being elected state representative from Barren County. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, and 9 -11 a.m. Friday at the J.C. Kirby & Son Lovers Lane Chapel. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

From Logan County Athletics: The last regular season basketball games are upon us. The Lady Cougars play Muhlenberg County at home. The JV game starts at 5 p.m. and the Varsity game will follow. The Boys will be traveling to Dawson Springs this evening for a JV/V doubleheader, starting at 6.

Red River leaders ask for prayers Tuesday

From Red River Meeting House: We hope you can set aside a time for fasting and praying this Tuesday, Feb. 25, for our upcoming 225th anniversary celebration of The Great Revival of 1800 that is being planned for October 10-12, 2025. Please pray for the planning of this event and those that will be participating in October. Our theme is “In Remembrance of Me”. Cougars’ Hightower named second team all-region

Logan County senior Samson Hightower has been named second team all-region in basketball. He leads the Cougars in scoring at 19.9 points per game, free throw accuracy (77.9 percent), free throws made (148), field goals made (173), three-pointers made (62), and in rebounding (212 for 7.6 average).

Cougars beat Todd to advance in postseason

The Logan County Cougars jumped out to a 17-2 lead, went up by 20 points after a quarter, withstood a Todd Central comeback late in the game, hit 22 of 28 free throws, and beat the Rebels 71-42 in the first round of the district tournament Monday at Franklin. Todd drew within 10 twice, but a 3-pointer by Nick Thomas, four straight free throws by Samson Hightower after a Todd personal foul and resulting technical foul, and a goal by Brady Hinton on an assist from Davis Switzer on the ensuing possession put Coach Josh Frick’s Cougars up 65-38. Hightower, who went 14 of 17 from the line, finished with 27 points and Hinton added 12. Senior Antavion Shemwell led the Rebels (2-27). Defending champion Logan (19-10) moves on to Friday’s finals and to region. In the opener, Franklin ended the season for the Russellville Lady Panthers, many of whom are middle school age.

Lady Cougars’ Adler named third team all-region

Freshman forward Brenley Adler of the Logan County Lady Cougars has been named Third Team All-Region. In her second season as a starter, she leads the team in scoring (11.9 points per game) and is second in rebounding at 6.6. Additionally, she tops the Lady Cougars in field goals made (111) and free throws hit (106). Going into tonight’s district tournament opener, in her career she has played in 91 varsity games, scored 867 points, grabbed 525 rebounds and hit 227 free throws. She has this postseason along with three more years to add to those totals.

Franklin ends Panthers’ season 56-44

The Franklin-Simpson Wildcats led the entire game but had to withstand a Russellville comeback on the way to a 56-44 win in the 13th District Tournament Tuesday at F-S. Coach Dee Spencer’s Wildcats led 17-11, 31-21 and 40-32 at the first three stops. Jamarian Gardner hit a 3-pointer and Noah Stovall dropped in a pair of free throws to pull the Panthers to within two at 41-39, but it was never that close again. Gardner and Stovall each scored 17 for Coach Phil Todd’s Panthers. Cole Sharer scored 15 points and Alan Johnson 13 for the Wildcats, who play defending champion and top seed Logan County in Friday’s 7 p.m. finals.

F-S holds off Cougars and Samson for title

Host Franklin-Simpson watched Logan County cut a 12-point lead to 1 late in the game but held off the Cougars 57-53 in the finals of the 13th District Tournament Friday. Cougar Samson Hightower scored 17 of his 32 points in the fourth quarter. Both teams go to region next week.
