Auburn going to the Dogs (Days) next weekend

The Dog Days of Summer return to Auburn for their ninth run this coming weekend.

Any kid growing up in the South in the years in and around World War II knows where the term Dog Days of Summer originated. It would be so hot and humid that every old dog didn’t want to do anything outside except crawl into the shade of the raised back porch.

The two weekends before this one were so hot that they would have sent Auburn’s pups indoors quickly. These last two days, however, have been more of the sit-in-the-cool-breeze-and-sip-sweet-tea variety.

Members of Auburn Tourism, event sponsors and city leaders are hoping Aug. 8-9 will be come-on-out-and-play puppy days.

Here is a list of events and available information on them:

Friday, Aug. 8

5K Glow Run/Walk: Registration begins at 5 p.m. for those who have not preregistered; Start 6 p.m.; awards will be presented in overall male, overall female and stroller divisions.

Cornhole Tournament: Under the pavilion at the park; registration is at 6 p.m. with bags flying at 7; bring your own partner; it’s a 100 percent payout plus trophies format.

Saturday, Aug. 9

Unlimited Bounce House & Carnival Games: 3-6 p.m. with the purchase of an $8 arm band

Pickleball Tournament: Played on the pickleboard courts at Auburn Park. It starts at 3 p.m.; fee $70 per team; limited to 16 teams; see accompanying graphic for registration details

Party on the Square Featuring Artis Green & Wild Aces; on the Square at 7 p.m.; no admission fee; bring your own chairs; food and wine will be available

Crafts, Concessions and Silent Auction; Downtown on the square; 3-6 p.m.

Coloring Contest: Coloring sheets can be picked up atyThe tourism tent, beginning at 3 p.m. Finished sheets should be turned in by 5:45.

Kids’ Parade: Lineup begins at 6:20 in front of the Café on Main. Parade will start at 6:30. Trophies will be awarded to the top three entries.

Golf Cart Parade: Begins at 8 p.m. in front of Auburn Fire Department
