Logan County High School is proud to announce the hiring of Phillip McKinney as the new head coach of the Lady Cougars softball program. Coach McKinney brings more than two decades of coaching experience across the middle school, high school, and collegiate levels, and is widely respected throughout Kentucky softball circles for his leadership and success on the field.
Most notably, McKinney served as the head coach at Warren East High School, where he compiled an impressive 307 career wins. During his tenure, his teams claimed three district championships (2015,2017,2018), four regional championships (2015, 2018, 2019, 2021), one regional runner-up (2017), two Kentucky 2A state runner-up finishes (2021, 2022), and two KHSAA state runner-up finishes (2018, 2019). His excellence was recognized with five Coach of the Year awards.
Beyond his success at the high school level, Coach McKinney has made a lasting impact on youth softball in the region. He is the founder of two well-known travel programs—Southern Kentucky Thunder and Southern Kentucky Outlaws—both of which have helped develop talent and promote the sport across the state.
“We are thrilled to welcome Coach McKinney to the Cougar family,” said Logan County High School Athletic Director Todd Adler. “His passion for the game, proven track record, and commitment to developing student-athletes make him a perfect fit for our program.”
To give the community a chance to meet Coach McKinney, Logan County High School will host a "Meet and Greet" event on Sunday, Aug. 10, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the LCHS softball field. This come-and-go event is open to all players, parents, and supporters of the program.
With a winning legacy and a vision for the future, Coach McKinney is poised to lead the Lady Cougars to new heights.
