Softball seeding was tight among lower three teams

The most important game that decided who would be facing highly favored and homestanding Franklin-Simpson in the opening game of the 13th District Softball Tournament may have been played in March.

If the Logan County Lady Cougars had beaten Russellville on March 31 instead of losing to the Lady Panthers 13-7, it would be third-seeded RHS facing Todd Central in tonight's second contest.

Since new Lady Cougar coach Phillip McKinney’s team won the second Clash of the Lady Cats and also split with Todd, LCHS would be 3-2 and  tied with Todd for that coveted slot opposite Franklin’s bracket. But that would have dropped RHS into fourth place.

If, however, Todd, RHS and LCHS had all ended with 2-2 records instead of Todd’s being 3-3. The pairings then would be the same as now, since Logan has the lowest RPI of the Coach Ryan Davenport’s Lady Panthers have a slightly higher RPI than do the Lady Cougars.

In the most recent Todd-Logan game, Todd’s Naomi Welborn Welborn had five hits and scored two runs, both coming off his own homers. She drove in seven runs.

The Lady Cougars have a measure of hope today, since the Todd Lady Rebels demonstrated that it’s possible to beat Coach Todd Caudill’s Lady Wildcats. Todd  beat the Lady Cats 7-4 on April 29.

Franklin-Simpson is 21-15 overall and 5-1 in the district with an RPI of.55787. good for 7th in the 19-team region. Todd is 16-13, 3-6, with a 12th best RPI of .49954. Russellville is 13-15, 16-11, .48674, which is 12th. RHS is 13-15, 6-11, .48674, 13th, Logan is 8-18, 2-8. .44195, 14th.

The championship is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday.
