Freshman Sarah Fite will play in the girls state golf tournament at Bowling Green Country Club this weekend after qualifying individually at the regional tournament at Tompkinsville Country Club with a 79.
Fite had a strong start, tied for the overall lead after her first nine holes with a 36, but shot 43 on her second nine. “We were in suspense until the final scorecard came in as to whether she was going to make it or not,” says Coach Ethan Meguiar, who coached Katherine Neely to a state individual title early in his golf-coaching career.
The winning team was Glasgow with a 320, a whopping 19 strokes ahead of runner-up Taylor County. For the Lady Scotties Ashton Foushee shot 74, Emily Alexander 75, Taylor Phelps 80 and Katie Jones 91. Ellen Kehoe led Taylor County with a 75 while Kayla Rodgers shot 83, Carlie Hazel 89 and Sarah Dickens 92
Others who qualified individually besides Fite were Mary Joiner of Franklin-Simpson with a 77, and Ashley Strong and Page Anderson, both of Monroe County, with a 78 and a 79, respectively.
“Sarah and her family are fairly new to Logan County,” Meguiar says “She transferred here last year from Mason County, and this was her first year playing golf for the Lady Cougars. She has been to the state tournament before with her former team in Mason County.
Other girls who participated in the tournament for LCHS were Grace Harris (senior)-98, Maeson Hayes-129, Meredith Johnson-119, and Katlyn Odle 136.
The Boys 3rd Region Golf Tournament was held the day before at Kenny Perry's Country Creek in Franklin. South Warren, led by senior Jared Brown, freshmen C.J. Jones and Dawson McDaniel, and seventh grader C.M. Mixon won the championship with a 304. Brown finished in the top 10 at state earlier this week. Greenwood was regional runner-up with a 310. Scores which counted came from Nick Newton, Chris Agro, Canon Claycomb and John Glenn. Claycomb shot a 78 as a sixth grader.
The Logan County boys shot 334 as a team, which Meguiar called “very respectable.” Cougars were led by senior Carson Zibart 79, Wesley Estes 80, Kenton Howard 84, Ben Wright 91, and Jack Wright 107.
“Carson Zibart played extremely well in his last high school match and had a real shot at qualifying for the state but came up a little short in the end,” Meguiar said.
