Down by 20 points late in the third quarter, the Logan County Lady Cougars scored nine straight points and made South Warren work hard for a 58-48 win in the Fourth Region Tournament at Allen County-Scottsville High School Thursday.
Senior Laura Hunt scored nine points in that third quarter, two of them on 3-point shots and a 3-point play on a bucket and a field goal.
Coach Finley Woodard’s team had cut the margin to 25-19 on a free throw by sophomore Brooke Barnes and to 31-24 on a goal by senior Megan Lindsey after a steal by junior Maegann Hardison. But South’s lead reached 51-31 before Lindsey scored again.
In the fourth quarter comeback, Hardison hit a 3-pointer, senior Katelyn Jones hit a pair of free throws, and junior Cierra Johnson made a steal and layup to cut the lead to 51-40 with two minutes remaining. That was about as close as the 13th District champions could get.
Hunt ended her career with a great stat line in this game. She had 15 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists and a blocked shot before fouling out. Hardison gave impetus to preparing for her senior year. She finished with 13 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals and an assist. She hit three 3-pointers and all four of her free throws. Johnson added a pair of steals. Barnes scored 7 points and Lindsey had 6 points on 3 of 3 field goal accuracy.
All five of them played double figure minutes, as did Madison Alvis, Taleia Mason and Jones. Freshman Logan Williamson scored a point at region. Senior Deja Thompson attempted a trio of 3-ponters. But starting forward Kapreshia Powell was not able to play, following an injury in the district tournament opener.
Amaya Lasley led the Lady Spartans with 19 points and Timitryi Patterson added 18. Patterson and Caroline Cowles each had 6 rebounds. Lasley added 4 assists. Cowles is the daughter of Mary Taylor Cowles, former WKU Lady Topper head coach, who assists her former assistant, Blaine Embry, who is now the South head coach.
South returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. against regional favorite Glasgow in the semifinals. Coach Justin Stinson’s Lady Scotties beat Russell County in Thursday’s regional opener.
