District soccer tournaments start tomorrow

The Russellville High School soccer field will be the site of both the girls and boys 13th District Tournaments Saturday and Monday. Franklin-Simpson is the top seed in both gender divisions. The Wildcats will play number four seed RHS in both. The girls will meet at 1 p.m. and the boys at 4:30. That means Logan County and Todd Central will go against each other in the other two semifinals. The number two Lady Cougars and Todd will hit the field about 2:45, and the number two Rebels will face the Cougars at 6:15. The finals are scheduled Monday with the girls match at 5:30 and the boys about 7:30.

Lady Cougar v’ball continues undefeated district win streak

For the second straight weekend, the Logan County Lady Cougars won the Silver division of an invitational volleyball tournament. They went 4-1, beating Edmonson County, Monroe County, host Allen County-Scottsville and John Hardin with their only loss to Franklin County. Then Tuesday, Coach Steven Lyne’s team beat Todd Central 3-0 to finish the regular season 6-0 for the 21st straight season. They haven’t lost a district match since Aug. 17, 2004. The Lady Cougars are now 18-8 with the postseason coming up.

Panthers earn running clock by halftime

Talk about flipping the field! After being on the wrong end of running clocks in their first five games this season, Coach Mikie Benton’s Russellville Panthers have earned a running clock in their favor by halftime tonight. Jerius Coleman’s 55-yard touchdown pass (to LaBryan Nourse with 7 seconds remaining put them ahead of homestanding Ballard Memorial 42-6 at the intermission. Madden Bloodworth kicked her sixth extra point without a miss. Coleman had also intercepted two Bomber passes, returning one for a touchdown. Amarus Morrow caught one of Coleman’s TD passes, and freshman Randall Morrow returned a punt 60 yards for a score. Jamarion Gardner ran 26 yards for a first-half score. JaCoveon Temple-Dickerson caught a 41-yard TD pass. By the end of the third quarter, it was 56-6 with Coleman and Gardner adding a touchdown each and Bloodworth running her total to 8 of 8 PAT kicks.

Blood drive at Crittenden Drive Wednesday

An American Red Cross Blood Drive will be held in the Multi-purpose Room of Crittenden Drive Church of Christ on Wednesday, Oct. 8, from noon-4 p.m. All donors will receive a $10 e-Gift Card from Amazon.

Tilghman holds off Cougars 35-27

Defending Class 4A state champion Paducah Tilghman had to withstand a serious challenge from visiting district opponent Logan County Friday before winning 35-27. The difference came in the second quarter when Coach Sean Thompson’s Blue Tornado outscored the Cougars 21-14. It was the first loss of the season for the Cougars. Both teams are now 6-1 overall.

Greg Howard coaching Warren East football

When district opponent Warren East comes to Cougar Field to face the Logan County Cougar football team on Oct. 24, a familiar face will be at the helm of the Raiders. Greg Howard, an Auburn resident who is retired from LCHS after having been a highly successful athletic director here in addition to being head coach of boys basketball, boys and girls cross country and girls and boys track. He now is athletic director of all the schools in the Warren County System and president of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Board of Controls. When Coach Tanner Hall resigned from coaching Raider football a week ago, Howard and Superintendent Rob Clayton decided that in the uncertainty of the situation it would be best for Howard to coach the team the remainder of the season. In his first game as a varsity head football coach, Greg Howard’s Raiders beat Allen County-Scottsville 30-14 Friday.

4-H Homeschool Club to learn about architecture

The Logan County 4-H Homeschool Club will meet Thursday at 4 p.m. and will dive into the world of famous buildings and architecture using LEGOs and blocks. Those attending will explore iconic structures from around the globe and try building their own versions while learning about design, creativity, and engineering. It’s hands-on, educational, and tons of fun—perfect for budding builders and architects! The meeting will be at the Logan County Extension Complex.

Jesse James Run/Walk draws 100 racers

On Oct. 4, the Jesse James 5K Walk/Run, organized by Jenn Seibold and Russellville Parks and Rec, was a popular community event! With 100 participants, the annual Logan County Tobacco & Heritage Festival event was filled with energy and enthusiasm. The winners: Overall Female Runner - Gemma Bristow, Overall Female Walker - Roberta Havens, Overall Male Runner - Matthew Messer, and Overall Male Walker - Jeff Meade of Russellville.

Fall Block Party planned for city schools

Russellville Schools will host their Fall Block Party on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 2-4 p.m. in the Rhea Stadium Parking Lot. There will be fun things to do for all grade levels, including hayrides, Trunk or Treat, bounce houses, yard games, music, snacks and a fall photo booth. If it’s raining, the party will be postponed a week.

Chloe Penrod and Landon Bibb top RHS royalty

Multi-sports standout Chloe Penrod and football lineman Landon Bibb, both seniors, were named Russellville High School Football Homecoming queen and king, recently. Freshman football and soccer player Randall Morrow was the prince, and Heer Patel, who was finishing her reign as one of the youngest Tobacco & Heritage Festival queens ever, was named princess.

Deuce Bailey starting at QB for Missouri State

Freshman Deuce Bailey, the son of former Logan County High School standout athlete Craig Bailey, is making his first start for Missouri State football tonight. It's a Conference USA game at Middle Tennessee. You can see the game on ESPN 2, and it's in the first quarter. RHS Alumni Meet & Greet set Friday

The Russellville Alumni Association will hold its annual Meet & Greet the Friday before Festival Parade Day this week. Anyone who has attended the Russellville Schools and their guests are welcome. It will be in the deGraffenried Lobby at RHS from 5-6 p.m.  The RHS classes of 1974 and 1975 will be honored, as will recently deceased retirees Esther White and Helon Williams. President of the Alumni Association is Kathleen Gorrell Collins. The cheerleading sweater shown in the accompanying picture was worn by Mary Lucy Franklin in the 1950s.

Cougars ranked 10th in state in Class 4A

Despite losing last week, the Logan County Cougars are still ranked in the top 10 in the state in Class 4A by KY High School Football. Coach Todd Adler’s team is now 6-1 after losing a close game to defending state championship Paducah Tilghman on the road last week. Also 6-1, Tilghman is ranked second in the state. The Russellville Panthers, who have won their last two games after losing their first five, are not ranked in Class 1A. Coach Mikie Benton’s team has lost to three ranked teams. In addition to the Cougars, RHS has fallen to Class 3A’s number three Murray and number 8 Rockcastle County. Both teams are off tonight, using their bye week for Fall Break and the Tobacco & Heritage Festival.

Holloway team wins Festival Golf Scramble

Logan County Tobacco & Heritage Festival Golf Scramble was held on Saturday at Rolling Hills Golf Course. The event drew 84 golfers. who enjoyed a day of fun and friendly competition under perfect weather conditions. Winners: 1st: Hunter Holloway, Ike Isenberg, Wayne Collins and Keith Leonard; 2nd: Donnie Chaffin, Talen Coursey, Greg Meacham and David Ezell; 3rd: Charles Gardner, Glenn Ingram, Jim Dauley and Tommy Dockery. The tournament was chaired, as always, by Auburn Bank President Brian White.

Tonight’s football game crucial for playoffs

The football games the teams from the Land of Logan are to play tonight will go a long way toward playoff seeding. That’s especially true for the Logan County Cougars. The winner of their contest with visiting Franklin-Simpson will be in the driver's seat to host a home game to start the playoffs. Each of them is 2-1 in the district with the loss have been inflicted by defending Class 4A state champ Paducah Tilghman. They each will be favored in next week’s game, although Logan’s matchup with Warren East Oct. 24 will be tougher than Franklin’s contest against Allen County-Scottsville. Russellville was in the playoffs all along with just four teams in the district, but a win at Caverna would guarantee the Panthers a home playoff game and the driver’s seat for another district title. The Logan County game is being carried live on WRUS. The Russellville-Caverna game will air Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.

Panthers & Cougars make big starts in district games

The Russellville Panthers and Logan County Cougars have gotten off to great starts in important district games tonight. The Panthers lead homestanding Caverna 27-6 at the half, outscoring the Colonels 20-0 in the second quarter. Quarterback Jerius Coleman threw three touchdown passes to JaCoveon Temple-Dickerson. The Cougars lead visiting Franklin- Simpson 35-13 at the intermission. Sophomore quarterback Luke Rogers has hit 9 of 10 passing attempts for 171 yards and 2 touchdowns, and he’s run for another. Cooper Parker and Damani Goodloe caught the scoring passes. Christian Helle ran for long touchdowns (43 and 78 yards) on consecutive touches. Caiden Kirby kicked all five extra points and consistently put his kickoffs deep, including the last one which was fumbled, recovered by Carson Carlock. and converted into a Cougar TD.

Todd makes Lady Cougars’ 23rd straight district title tough

For the 23rd consecutive season, the Logan County Lady Cougars are champions of the 13th District Volleyball Tournament. But unlike the other 22, they came close to losing the championship match. They had not lost a set in those first 22 tournaments, but Monday they fell behind homestanding Todd Central two sets to zero. Coach Steven Lyne’s team won the final three sets 25-18, 25-20, and 16-14 in what was essentially overtime. Not only does the championship streak continue, but it has now been 7,783 days since Logan County lost a district match—regular season or postseason. The regional tournament will be played at LCHS.

Local teams favored in home district games tonight

The Logan County Cougars are a five-touchdown favorite over visiting Warren East tonight, and the Russellville Panthers are favored by two touchdowns at home against Fulton County in their final district regular season games. Coach Todd Adler’s Cougars locked up the number two seed in their Class 4A district with a 63-27 clock-runner at Franklin-Simpson last week. Coach Mikey Benton’s Panther built a big lead and held on for a 55-42 win over Caverna. Fulton County has the same 2-0 district record as RHS, so tonight’s winner is the number one seed in Class IA. Tonight also marks the return of former Cougar athletic director Greg Howard, who is filling in as East interim head football coach in addition to being director of athletics for the entire Warren County School District. The Russellville game will be caried live on WRUS with the Logan game being aired at 2 Saturday.

Cougar cross country headed to state

Winning a tiebreaker by one-hundredth of a second, Logan County Cross Country Cross County is headed to run in the state meet this weekend. Coach Sye Head’s Cougars tied for second with defending champion Paducah Tilghman in the super regionals held at LCHS Saturday. Union County finished first, and the second-place team goes, too. A huge crowd was on the grounds of LCHS and the Logan County Career and Technology Center all day. Watch The LoJo for more details about the race.

Lady Cougars to take on Greenwood in regional semis at home

As usually happens this time of year, the Logan County and Greenwood volleyball teams will face each other in the regional tournament tonight. This time, the match is at LCHS, beginning at 5:30. The contest is rated a tossup. The Lady Gators (23-15 overall, 6-7 region) are ranked fourth in the region with an RPI of .59903 while the Lady Cougars are 23-11, 11-4, .59090. Greenwood won an August match between the two traditional powers. Number one Bowling Green and number two Warren East will clash in the second semifinal.

Library to host Maker Mart Saturday

Logan County Public Library will host its annual Maker Mart this Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. This is a showcase for local make-it-youselfers to sell their creations. Logan at South Warren tonight to be a Clash of Powers

The most intriguing football game of the night in Kentucky on this Thursday could very well be the Logan County Cougars (8-1, ranked sixth in Class 4A) at South Warren (9-0, first in Class 6A). The game will be broadcast on all of WRUS' platforms, starting at 7 p.m. The Cougars' only loss has been to defending state 4A champ Paducah Tilghman.

South flexes abundant muscles against Logan

South Warren, the top-ranked team among Kentucky’s biggest high schools, won convincingly over Logan County Thursday. The Spartans won 49-14, running their record to 10-0 while Logan fell to 8-2. For the Cougars, quarterback Luke Rogers connected with Damani Goodloe for an 80-yard touchdown in the second quarter, and in the third quarter Christian Helle ran for a 65-yard score. Caiden Kirby was successful kicking both extra points, making him 20 for 20 over the last four games and 38 of 39 for the season. Coach Todd Adler’s second-seeded Cougars will entertain Marion County to start the Class 4A playoffs next Friday.

Panthers win fifth straight game

When Louisville Holy Cross comes to Ken Barrrett Field next Friday, Coach Eric Dick’s Cougars will be facing a district champion on a five-game winning streak. Class 1A Region I District 1 champion Russellville,  which started the season 0-5, all on running clocks, beat Class 3A Butler County 28-7 Friday to even its record at 5-5.
