The RHS Academic Team had their first meet of the season on Monday night, playing Owensboro Catholic and Madisonville North Hopkins in Pennyrile Academic Association league play in Madisonville. In Mathematics, Wesley Stratton placed 4th in varsity, Austin Coursey placed 3rd in junior varsity, and Adam Williams placed 4th in junior varsity. In Science, Phillip Wilkerson placed 2nd in junior varsity. In social studies, Sarah Williams placed 3rd in varsity, and Will Mullen placed 6th in junior varsity. In Arts & Humanities, Madison Rose placed 3rd in junior varsity.
Although both the varsity and junior varsity teams lost their quick recall matches, the junior varsity team of Austin Coursey, Adam Williams, and Phillip Wilkerson made a strong showing against Madisonville North Hopkins, losing by only one point. Considering that the RHS JV quick recall team only had three players (there should be four, but Madisonville agreed to proceed with RHS JV having only three), it was a good showing for these freshmen players in their first match at the high school level.
Jennifer Rogers is the head coach of the RHS Academic Team. She is assisted by Lauren Fynboe and Donna Wilkerson. The team’s next meet is
Sept. 29 at Hopkins County Central.
