Ask a Logan County softball coach if he/she would rather start a season 3-0 or 1-2 and that win be a blowout of district rival Franklin-Simpson.

Fortunately for new Lady Cougar coach Mark Wood, he doesn’t have to decide. He’s got the best of both worlds. Maybe we can stretch it to three worlds.

Wood’s Ladies are 3-0, not 1-2, and one of those wins is an 11-1 romp over Franklin, which has dominated the district with few exceptions for well over a decade.

Logan scored five runs in the fifth inning of that decisive victory over the Lady Kats. Freshman KJ Page and sophomore Kennedy Nichols had big hits in that frame.

Page, who has overcome numerous career-threatening injuries, got 3 hits including a double, scored 4 runs and stole 2 bases.

Nichols drove in 4 runs on two hits that were highlighted by a two-run homer, the team’s first of the young season. She walked in her other two at bats.

Rosie Kerchenski had 2 hits, including a double, and scored 2 runs. Brea Croslin singled twice, scored a run and drove in another. Abby Canler got the other hit.

Sydney Lee pitched the 5-inning win. She gave up 1 run on 4 F-S hits and a walk while striking out 6.

Madison Davis, the district’s (and maybe the region’s) most experienced pitcher, took the loss for Coach Todd Caudill’s team.

Logan had started the season with a 14-2 shellacking of Hopkinsville.

The Lady Cougars scored 10 runs in the second on a double by Lee, singles by Shelby Gettings and Nichols, and walks by Jillian McLellan and Croslin.

Page showed her legs are working well now, as she stole 3 of the 7 bases Logan pilfered. She got on with a hit and a pair of walks, and scored each time. Paige Vanzant stole two bases as a courtesy runner, and Presley Harris and Canler joined them with a stolen base each.

Croslin walked twice and scored 3 runs. Canler and Lee each doubled, and Lee added a single to it. Lee also walked and drove in a run.

Eighth grader Shelby Gettings played second, got a hit and scored a run.

Freshman Abby Hinton was the opening day pitcher and responded with a complete 5-inning win. She allowed the 2 runs on 5 hits and no walks.

Wood’s team won its third game without a loss Friday 3-1 against McLean County. Statistics are not yet available.
