Barren County Schools recently announced that John Myers has been named the new head football coach at Barren County High School. Myers is a former football coach and principal of Russellville High School and Transportation Director for the entire school system.
When his wife Jennifer left teaching in the Russellville Schools to become a principal in Glasgow, John Myers coached one more season at RHS before resigning to join his family in Barren County.
Barren County is one of the two largest schools in the Fourth Region along with Warren Central. The Trojans compete in the state’s largest division, Class 6A. They went 5-6 last year, including 2-1 in their district, before losing to McCracken County in the first round of the playoffs.
The press release announcing the hiring of Coach Myers from the Barren County Schools follows:
With 24 years of experience as a head coach, he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position.
Myers began his coaching career with Mayfield High School in 1996, where he served as assistant football coach and head baseball coach. From 2000-2004, he led the Monroe County High School football program.
In 2004, he became head football coach at Russellville High, where he served until 2017. During his tenure at Russellville, the team went 118-57 over the course of 14 seasons. Myers led the team to 21 playoff wins, six district championships, and two regional championships/state semifinal appearances.
In 2018, Myers became the offensive coordinator for Glasgow High School and served in that role through 2023,
Myers graduated from Hancock County High School in 1989 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Campbellsville College in 1993, where he also played quarterback. He completed his graduate program at Western Kentucky University in 1996. He also earned his master’s degree in Educational Leadership and completed both his principal and superintendent certifications at Western Kentucky University.
He has served as a classroom teacher, principal, and district-level director over the course of his career in public education. He currently serves on the board of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for South Central Kentucky East.

Barren County School Superintendent Bo Matthews commented, “We are excited to name John Myers as the new head football coach of the Barren County Trojans. We interviewed applicants who possessed passion and experience, built successful programs, and were successful at the district, regional, and state levels. Coach Myers checks all of those boxes. He’s a communicator and a motivator. He has high expectations for our program and all associated with Barren County football. We welcome him to Barren County.”
Amy Irwin, Barren County High School Principal, stated, ” We welcome Coach Myers and appreciate the dedication he will bring to the growth and development of our student-athletes.”
Barren County High School Athletic Director Warren Cunningham added, “I am extremely excited to work with Coach Myers. He has a proven track record of success, and I think he will be a great fit for BCHS football.”
