By sweeping Todd Central this week, the Logan County Cougars finished in a tie with Franklin-Simpson for the top place in 13th District Baseball. The wins over the Rebels were by 6-2 at Elkton Monday and 10-0 at home Tuesday.
A week earlier, the Cougars had split with Franklin-Simpson on consecutive days, taking the home victory 7-1 but falling 3-2 at Franklin. If comparative scores are the tiebreaker, the Cougars would be the top seed in the district tournament in two and a half weeks. It’s a three-team district, since Russellville is not fielding a high school team this year.
Chance Sweeney pitched the win at Todd, giving up two unearned runs on four hits and a walk while striking out 12 Rebels.
Brady Hinton homered, singled, walked, drove in a pair of runs and scored twice. Tripp Wadlington also homered, walked and scored, and Harper Butler doubled in a run and scored. Also getting hits were Dayman McLean and Kade Wall, who was on base in all four plate appearances, walking three times. Also scoring were Davin Yates and Samuel Hayes. Butler and Noah Mosley each stole a base.
McLean pitched the shutout Tuesday, giving up seven hits but walking only one and striking out seven.
Sweeney homered in the second game, doubled and singled, piled up four RBIs and scored. Also doubling were Jason Mautz, Mosley and Hayes. Yates singled twice, and James Singleton, Hinton and Mosley each got a hit. McLean walked twice with Mosley and Butler joining him in drawing a free pass.
The Cougars were four for four while stealing bases with Butler, Hinton, Mosley and Wall getting one each.
For Todd Central in the opener, Devin Schutt doubled twice among his three hits. Zack Robinson and George Cumbee also doubled. Connor Wheeler and Schutt pitched. Grady Reding and Schutt scored the runs.
Schutt also got three hits in the game at LCHS for Coach Jim Daigle‘s team. Also singling were Cumbee, Robinson, Reding and Hayden Strader. Robinson was the pitcher.
In a 10-5 win over Russell County Saturday, Coach Ethan Meguiar’s team had eight different players get a hit. Yates, Butler and Wadlington each doubled with Wall, Hayes, Hinton, Sweeney and Mosley singling.
Wall walked twice in addition to the single, drove in two runs and scored three. Hayes goot the only stolen base, drove in a run and scored. Sweeney scored twice.
Braden Engler was the starting pitcher and Singled pitched in relief, striking out 10 Lakers in 5.2 innings.
The three wins ran the Cougars’ record to 15-13 after they lost 9 of their first 13 games. They are the fifth-highest rated team in the region.
