WKU head baseball coach Matt Myers will not be retained, Director of Athletics Todd Stewart announced Monday. A national search for the next Hilltopper Baseball head coach will begin immediately.
In Myers' fourth season at the helm in 2015, the Hilltoppers finished with a 24-28 record and a 10-19 mark in Conference USA play and missed qualifying for the conference tournament for the first time since 1998. WKU went 3-11 at home in C-USA action and lost 10 of its last 11 league games down the stretch.
One of the players Myers has signed for next season is Logan County pitcher Caleb Bruner.
"Matt Myers has always handled himself with total class while working tirelessly on behalf of our baseball program, and we thank him for his dedication, efforts and sacrifices," said Stewart. "He, his staff and our players have represented WKU with professionalism on and off the field and with distinction in the classroom. We also had some quality non-conference wins this season. Unfortunately, the program's overall body of work over the last four years has not met the on-field performance standards all of us expect. We must have more success in conference play and the postseason. Our 11th place finish in Conference USA this season with an experienced lineup fell far short of our goals, and our failure to qualify for the C-USA Tournament was particularly disappointing."
Myers took over the program prior to the 2012 season after being on the Hilltopper staff under previous head coach Chris Finwood since 2008. In four seasons under Myers, the Hilltoppers went 106-118 overall, 54-65 in conference games and 1-6 in conference tournament play.
WKU's four conference finishes under Myers were eighth place, fifth place, fifth place and 11th place.
"I would like to thank Dr. Gary Ransdell, Todd Stewart, Jim Clark, the WKU Athletics Department and University for their support of me and our program," Myers said. "I also want to thank the many people in the Bowling Green community that have been so caring and supportive of me and my family. I cannot begin to tell you how much your support has meant. It was always my goal to bring this community a championship, and I am sorry we were not able to accomplish that."
