Seven seniors who have struggled, suffered and yet persevered will be honored tonight as part of the season-ending football game at Logan County High School. The greatest celebration would come if they can get a win in their final game as Cougars.
Coach Steve Duncan’s team will face one of their closest neighbors, Todd Central, as the 2015 season comes to a close.
It’s been well documented that Logan County has the state’s longest football losing streak. They have lost 32 straight games, dating back to a win over Class 5A Barren County on Oct. 12, 2012.
Going into this season, it appeared the most winnable games would be Hopkins County Central and Todd County Central. The Cougars came close at Hopkins County, falling 13-12 at the hands of the Storm and what appeared to be a home-oriented officiating crew.
Todd is a better team than it has been in recent years. Although the Rebels have won only two games, they have been competitive in several, including in the first half against Russellville. And Coach Bryan Jones’ team is headed to the playoffs next week, although the trip to powerful Mayfield is a tough reward.
Todd’s primary offensive weapon may be running back Eric Przewoznik. Noah Bicksler is an adept kicker, and Trey Dickerson is a force on defense.
Logan has had trouble getting its offense going. The Cougars are averaging fewer than seven points per game and have scored only 18 points total in their last three outings. Eight of their opponents have scored over 30 points against them.
Yet the Cougars keep their heads up and continue to give it all they’ve got.
The seven seniors who will be better, stronger, tougher adults from this prolonged streak are Jarrett Hamilton, Connor McColpin, A.J. Sydnor, Billy Vick, Will Robey, Jonathan Oliver and Ethan Reinitz.
Also to be honored tonight are senior golfers Kenton Howard and Maeson Hayes along with band members Bethany Bush, Brittany Carter, Cassie Cooper, Kayla Hunt, Hunter Johnson, Jackie Johnson, Nicholas Manning, Kirsten Matthews, Triston Oberhausen, Kat Pfistner, Gavin Scruggs and Peyton Taylor.
Seniors in volleyball, soccer and cross country are being honored separately.
A reunion of the 1983 and ’84 football teams—the first to play football at LCHS—had been planned, but that is being delayed since Coach Steve Eans cannot be at Cougar Field because of a family medical situation.
Athletic Director Greg Howard says that the members of those two teams who attend are asked to sign in at the gate, and they will be recognized during the game. “We will have a much bigger celebration for them next season,” he says.
Game time is 7 p.m. Andy and Zack Woodall of WRUS will record the game for airing Saturday afternoon.
