One day after their graduation, seniors D.J. Beard and Jack Wright led the Logan County Cougars to a 13-0 win over Todd Central in the opening game of the 13th District Baseball Tournament at Russellville’s Kelly Russell Field Monday.
Beard, who has been a dependable and effective starting pitcher for the Cougars the last several weeks, crafted a no-hit shutout of the Rebels. He faced the minimum 15 batters, finishing one walk away from a perfect game. That runner was erased and Beard finished his domination in the five-inning mercy rule victory.
Wright was awesome at the plate. He homered, doubled and singled for seven total bases, drove in four runs and also stole a base.
Their teammates also contributed. Nick Wooden had two each of hits, runs and RBIs. Dylan Penick doubled, walked, drove in three runs and scored two. Austin Rayno singled and walked, stole two bases and scored three runs. Kaleb Justice singled, walked, got an RBI, stole a base and scored a run. Koby Wall singled and scored two runs.
Jackson Campbell walked three times and scored a run while Third Bell walked twice and scored a run. Chandler Silvey stole a base and scored.
Clayte Weathers took the loss on the mound for the Rebels.
Logan will play in the championship game Tuesday at 6 p.m.
This is the 17th time in the 18 seasons of the 21st century that Coach Ethan Meguiar’s Cougars have reached the district finals and the regional tournament.
