Western Kentucky Coca-Cola Bottling Company and Logan County High School have announced that Luke Wetton, a senior at LCHS, is a National Finalist for
the Coca-Cola Scholarship. Luke is one of approximately 250 students to win a scholarship among the 69,000 applicants nationwide for these prestigious
scholarships.
As a result, he has been granted a $10,000 scholarship, which he plans to use at highly respected Centre College in Danville.
LCHS Principal Casey Jaynes and Timmy Garrett Western Kentucky Coca-Cola Bottling jointly made the announcement.
Wetton has been involved in many activities. He has been president of the LCHS Beta Club as well as regional vice president. He has been an officer of
the LCHS FFA, FBLA, the Chemistry Club, the Student Technology Leadership Program, Student Council and his class. He has been creative art director of
the Pep Club and has been involved in band, tennis, Spanish Club, and DECA at school along with the Southern Heights Baptist Church Youth Group.
The LoJo
Breanna Shelton,
an Russellville High School senior, has received the University of Kentucky’s most prestigious four-year scholarship, the Otis A. Singletary
scholarship. Named for former UK President, the scholarship covers the full cost of tuition, room and board and a personal stipend of $1,500 per year.
The winners must have a 3.75 high school grade point average and score 31 or higher on the ACT. The extremely competitive selection process also
included an essay, an interview process, and documentation of extra-curricular and volunteer activities.
During her tenure at RHS, she has participated in many activities, challenged herself in the classroom and is working for 610 WRUS Radio. She’s been a
varsity cheerleader for 5 years, is the 2010 Senior Class President and is a member of the following organizations:BETA, DECA, NHS, Pep and Science
Club, 4-H, Leadership Logan, and Russellville Arts Council. When she graduates, Breanna will attend UK with a major in Agricultural Biotechnology. She
plans to become an orthopedic surgeon.

Russellville City Schools
Concert Festival is the yearly KMEA Concert Band Assessment event. This year, students performed in the newly remodeled VanMeter Auditorium at WKU.
Both the 7/8 grade band and the high school band played two prepared pieces for a panel of three judges. Both groups were also required to sight read,
with only five minutes of verbal preparation time before playing the piece for the first time in front of a judge, who also scored that piece. All
scores are published. The 7th/8th grade band received a Proficient rating and the high school band received a Distinguished rating.
Stevenson Elementary School’s IMPACT team was formed last year by fifth grade teacher Tracy Naylor, who was already providing the group extra
math instruction. The boys now are all doing very well in both reading and math and have shown excellent classroom behavior. Team members are
Johnny Drumgole, Micah Naylor, DeAndre Rivera, Shon Kees, Deante Dowlen, Deshawn Mason, Tony Hampton, Paul Jones, Jaylyn McMurry and Jacob Naylor.
SES fifth graders celebrated Arbor Day by helping to plant a Pin Oak tree in the front of the school. Russellville Tree Board members Mary Lucy Franklin and Mike McCormick were on hand to talk to students about how to plant a tree and to read a proclamation about Arbor Day.
Russellville Parks and Recreation Director Kathy Maroney was also there to talk to students. Each student was given two tree seedlings to take
home and plant. Madison Rose, Brittney Taylor and Alexis Moneypennywere winners of the Arbor Day poster contest. Alexis’ poster (which won first
place) will be sent to Paducah to compete in the state level contest.
Logan County High School
Adam Webster
, a Civics instructor at LCHS, was recently recognized as one of 13 finalists for the Kentucky Outstanding Civic Leadership Award at Rupp Arena in
Lexington. Mr. Webster represented Kentucky’s Region 4 in the competition sponsored by the Civic Literacy Initiative of Kentucky (CLIK).
LCHS reading instructor Rachel Hanger has been awarded the WKU MAE Literacy Graduate Student of the Year award and the Outstanding Graduate
Student for the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences for the 2009- 2010 academic year.
The LCHS Department of Agricultural Education was recently recognized as one of the Top 10 Performing Ag. Ed. programs in the state. The ranking was
based on KOSSA Skill Standards testing of schools with 30-49 students taking the test, during the 2008-09 school year.
Sophomore Victoria Allen has been accepted into the Gatton Academy at Western Kentucky University for the next school year! She is one of 61
students statewide to receive this honor/ opportunity.
Junior Cameron Hesson has been elected FBLA State Vice President for 2010-11.
Senior Brett Sowell on being named as an Allstate Sport Spotlights selection for April.

The following nine juniors each received a Drive the Dream Gear-Up Scholarship valued at $1000: Sabrina Fuller, Graig Grisham, Kristen Hightower, Will McKenzie, Taylor Morris, Lindsey Stahl, Caitlyn Toon, Anna Wilkins & Kelsey Wilson. Gear-Up
is a program that follows students from elementary through high school encouraging them to succeed in academics and informs them of upcoming
educational opportunities.
LCHS Band had 11 Distinguished & 4 Proficient ratings at the KMEA Solo & Ensemble Festival. Those receiving the Distinguished ratings were
Britney Cropper, Sarah Gilliam, Nicole Gregory, Samantha Hatcher, Jordan Imlay, Caitlynn Oberhausen, Shelby Richey, Bailey Scott, Racheal
Shoulders, Paige Whittaker & Abby Zibart
. Students receiving Proficient ratings were Katyln Clark, Thomas Landrum, Matthew Thomas & Tyson White.
The LCHS Symphonic Band earned four Distinguished ratings at the KMEA Concert Festival April 16 at WKU.
Receiving distinguished scores on their On Demand Writing Test last semester were Ariana Baldock, Daniel Chick, Weylin Gilbert, Anna Harris, Kelsey Hinton, Kelly Miller, Moriah Sweeney & Luke Wetton. In recognition of this
outstanding achievement, each of these students have received a reserved parking spot in the front of the school.
The following LCHS students are to be recognized by the Bowling Green Hot Rods at an upcoming game for being the most improved students in their
respected grade levels: Anthony Bellar (9th), Dakota Flewallen (10th), Lawton Jackson (11th) &Brett Sowell (12th). For
their excellence as student musicians, the following will also be recognized: Tyson White (9th), Jordan Imlay (10th), Bailey Scott
(11th) & Ellyn Kerchenski (12th).
Olmstead Elementary School
In March Olmstead students participated in Hoops\Jump Rope for Heart under the direction of Coach Nick Hildabrand, They raised $2,653 for the
American Heart Association! Congratulations to the following students:
Top Collector for Jump Rope for Heart: was Evett Young ($275). Top Collector for Hoops for Heart: was Jerrod Long ($163). 3 vs. 3 Girls’
Champions: was the team of Megan Lindsey, Savannah Shelton, and Brittany Blackford while the 3 vs. 3 Boys’ Champions were Will Bingham, Lorenzo Garcia, Mason Parker and Andrew Milam.
