A surprisingly young Logan County softball team beat Warren Central 16-5 Friday for their first win of the season.

Six returning senior starters and two juniors who played extensively last year were expected back, but only one of them, senior Torrie Pollard, is currently with the team. Also back is two-year starter Brea Croslin, who still is only an eighth grader.

So new coach Amanda Nuyt Trimble is relying heavily on a team that consists primarily of freshmen and middle schoolers.

They came through for her in the win over Central. Seventh grader Abby Hinton pitched the win. Eighth graders Sydney Lee, Kennedy Nichols and Croslin plus freshmen Jillian McLellan and Pressley Harris each had two hits.

Pollard led the way with three hits along with two each of RBIs and runs scored. She doubled twice, as did Lee. Croslin scored three runs while eighth graders Abby Canler, Lee and McLellan and freshman Harris scored twice each. Also scoring were freshmen Sarah Beth Hale, Blayke Bingham and Rosie Kerchenski.

Lee, who played a lot as a seventh grader, drove in three runs with Nichols and Pollard plating two each.

Hinton threw 55 strikes on 75 pitches and walked only one Lady Dragon. She struck out six in the five innings she worked.

Jayda Bays and Akilah Whitfield each had three hits for Coach Jammie Carter’s Lady Dragons.

Trimble’s team had come close in their opener, falling 3-2 at Hopkinsville.

The Lady Cougars scored their two runs in the fourth inning. Lee doubled, advanced on Hale’s single, and scored on Harris’ hit. Hale then scored on an error.

The Lady Tigers had taken the lead on a two-run double by Taylor Straight in the second inning. The winning run scored in the eighth when number nine hitter N. Clayton reached on an error, advanced on a fielder’s choice, and scored on Shelby Harbour’s walk-off single.

Meagan Ferguson pitched the first four innings, giving up the two runs on five hits and no walks. Hinton pitched the final three-plus innings. She allowed only one hit but took the loss on the unearned run.

Kennedy had two hits for Logan with Harris, Ferguson and Lee getting the others. Winning Hoptown pitcher Darby White didn’t give up a walk.
